_ _ _ _ _ [Abm] _ _ [Db] _
_ I used to live in _ [Ab] _ Paris for a while and [Em] _ [D] I used to go out walking [Cm] the streets there quite
a lot and [G] _ sometimes when you walk around you hear this, I don't know what they call it,
it's a little barrel organ [C] thing, they wind [Gb] it and it's got this special sound, it's very
very French [B]
and for some reason I've [Abm] always liked France _ [A]
and French music.
[Em] I very much like [Abm] Edith Piaf _ and [Gb] if you've never heard her, she's worth listening to.
_ [F] For some reason I'd always fancied writing [G] a song with some French sort of flavour to
it and so one day I'd heard this barrel organ winding [N] away and so I sat down with my guitar
and I don't really [Am] speak French but [Ab] I knew this phrase, c'est la vie, that's life, that's
life _ and [G] I thought maybe I could make a [Abm] song out of that.
So anyway [A] I wrote the song and we recorded it in Paris and we put it on the record and
put it on the album and sometime later [Gb] the song got covered by a man called Johnny Halliday
and [Eb] Johnny Halliday, Johnny Halliday, _ is actually the French Elvis [G] Presley and he's very [C] very
popular and he's been popular for [B] many many years.
[Em] They say that [Bm] there's not a French person over the age of 16 that [B] hasn't seen him live,
perform live, quite an incredible statistic, it's true, [Gb] I believe it probably is.
Anyway he recorded _ _ C'est la vie and he had a number one hit with it and I was very proud
because you know it's not easy for an Englishman to write a French song, they don't _ like it
very much and so that gave me a lot of joy.
_ So anyway I'd like to perform [N] it for you tonight, here it is, C'est la vie. _ _
