Music legend Greg Allman has died.
He was 69.
When it came to the Allman Brothers band,
he played [G] on everything.
They were the quintessential Southern [Dm] rock band, even though Greg really
[G] disliked that tag.
[Dm] His management confirmed his death today, saying Allman passed away
peacefully at his [E] home in Savannah, [G] Georgia.
Greg [Dm] struggled with health issues over [E] the
past several years.
[G] During that time, Greg considered being on the road playing music
with his brothers and [Em] solo band for [G] his beloved fans.
Essential medicine for his soul.
Playing
music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.
He was born Gregory Lenoir Allman on December 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee.
He was always
[A] the main vocalist and composer of the Allman Brothers [Dm] band.
For a lot of years, the group
had that [A] three [G] musketeers motto, all [D] for one and one for all.
They lived [Dm] together, played,
traveled together, [A] partied together, [Dm] which if you're starting a band makes it a little
[A] easier.
We're talking [Dm] 1969 here.
They [C] were starving, [G] malnourished, [Dm] and looking for an
audience.
And of course they stayed up all night.
When they weren't playing, [C] they [G] were
partying.
[Dm] Dwayne Allman's vision of the band was to have [G] a different group, with two
lead guitarists and two drummers.
They even toyed with calling themselves Beelzebub.
Those
two first Allman Brothers band LPs, the self-titled debut from 69, [A] and 1970's Idle Wild South
were not really big hits at first.
Even though they had classic tunes on both, the first
had Whipping Post, which Rolling Stone magazine [Dm] called an enduring anthem, [A] rife with tormented
blues ballad imagery.
[Am] It also contained Muddy Waters' classic Trouble No [G] More.
Idle [Dm] Wild
South had Midnight Rider, which Greg Allman called, the song I'm most proud of in my career.
[G] It also featured [Dm] a future concert [D] mainstay, In the Memory of Elizabeth Reed, a jazz-flavored
[G] groovy instrumental.
The [Dm] Architects of Southern Rock, however, found their footing on their
third album.
[G] Greg Allman one day had [Dm] a lightbulb moment where he realized that even if they
didn't have hits, even if their albums didn't sell [G] as well as they wanted [Dm] to, they'd always
make a living on the road.
That audience was growing all the [A] time.
And he [G] thought, maybe
it's time for a [C] live album.
In July [Dm]
1971, they released At Fillmore East.
[G] It's considered
one of [F] the best live albums [D] of all time.
It peaked at number [Am] 13, their [D] highest at that
[G] point, and [D] everything they had [E] was on that album.
[G] And as they say in rock and roll, everything
changed after that.
With increased popularity came [D] the usual [G] rock and roll carnage, drugs
and booze.
Dwayne Allman and bassist Barry Oakley and even a few of the roadies went
into rehab.
The band's biggest blow came on October 29th, [D] 1971.
[G] At the age of only 24,
Dwayne [E] Allman was killed [Am] in a motorcycle accident.
On deciding the future of the band, Trucks
once said, We all had [G] this thing in [Dm] us, and Dwayne put it there.
He was the teacher, and
he gave something to us, [Am] his disciples, [G] and we [D] had to play out.
The next album, Eat a
[Dm] Peach did feature Dwayne Allman prominently [C] and it reached number [G] 5 on [Dm] the charts.
On
the LP, a gorgeous tune, Melissa, that was originally thought to be too soft [G] for the
group.
Greg wrote it [Dm] before he was in the band in 1967 and later played it at [G] Dwayne's
funeral.
Things got worse.
Bassist Barry Oakley was killed in another motorcycle accident
just a few blocks from where Dwayne had died.
They are [C#] buried side by [Dm] side.
Interestingly,
[G] they called the next album Brothers and Sisters, which is weird because they were not getting
along.
There was drugs in the way and a [Dm] lot of arguments.
The album [A] did feature Ramblin'
Man, their only [Am] top 10 hit.
And by [Gm] the way, this album was their only number [Dm] one.
From
1999 to 2014, Trucks' nephew, Derek, joined the group as [G] a guitarist.
They broke [Dm] up and
reformed [G] three times.
[Dm] They eventually retired in [D] 2014.
Melissa Etheridge said today,
My [Dm] Southern Rock heart is breaking.
Brad Paisley tweeted, What a [D] legacy Greg Allman leaves
behind.
Jam on [D#] in the great hereafter.
[Dm] And Keith Urban tweeted, My heart [A] breaks today
at the passing of a soul brother, Greg [D] Allman.
Blessings and peace to [F] all the Allman [D] family.
And Ringo [C] Starr's message, [G] Rest in peace [D] Greg Allman.
Peace and love to all the [F] family.
Just last January, [D] Allman Brothers long time [G] drummer, Butch [Dm] Trucks died from suicide.
He
was also 69 and at that time, Greg said, [G] I'm heartbroken.
[D] I've lost another brother and
it hurts beyond words.
[G] Butch and I knew each other since we were teenagers and we were
bandmates for 45 years.
He was a great man and a great drummer and I'm going to miss
him forever.
Rest in peace, Brother Butch.
In the 1970s as a teenager, my tastes were not sophisticated or I wasn't curious enough
to discover the Allman Brothers band.
Long before the tabloids were what they [Am] are today,
Greg, of course, had married Cher in 1975.
They are long divorced.
