I think this song took me about a year and a half to finish,
mostly because I was scared about how dark and kind of gothic it was.
And when I did finally sort of succumb to the song and got done with it,
I was absolutely positively sure that nobody would ever touch it with a ten-foot pole.
But I liked it and I decided that I would go into the studio and make a [E] demo of it,
just to satisfy myself, because I thought it was a [Eb] good song.
But nobody was going to cut it, nobody was going to record it.
So the very first artist that ever heard it recorded it, within a couple of weeks, I think.
And not only that, it was a single, and it was just everything that I knew that it wouldn't be.
And I learned a really important lesson then.
That's not my job to worry about that stuff, and it was a good thing.
And I have to remind myself from time to time, but all that other stuff just doesn't matter.
[Ab] It's just getting the song out that's what matters.
[Bb]
Well [Bbm] [Eb] [Db]
[F] she seemed alright [Db] by dawn's early light
[F] Though she looked a little worried [Db] and weak
[Eb] She tried to pretend he wasn't drinking again
[Gm] But daddy left the proof [Eb] on her cheek
I was only eight [Db] years old that summer
[F] And I always seemed to be in the [Bb] way
[Fm] So I took myself down to [F] the fair in town
On Independence Day
[Ab] [F]
[Ab] [Ab] Well word gets around in [Db] a small, small town
They said he was a dangerous man
[Abm] Mama was [Bb] proud and she [Db] stood [Abm] her ground
But she [Eb] knew she was on the losing end
[Ab] Some folks [Db] whispered, some just talked
But everybody looked the other [Db] way
[Fm] And when time ran out, there was [Db] no one left
[Eb] On Independence [Ab] Day
Let [Eb] freedom ring
Let the white [Fm] dove sing
Let [Db] the whole world know that [Ab] today
Is a [Eb] day of reckoning
Let the weak [Fm] be strong
Let the right [Db] be wrong
Roll the [Ab] stone away
Let the [Eb] guilty pay
It's Independence [Ab]
Day
[Db] [Ab]
[Db] [Ab] Well she lit up the sky that 4th of July
[Ab] By the time that the firemen come
They just put out the flames
Took down some leaves
[Eb] And sent me to the county home
[Ab] Now I ain't saying it's [Db] right or it's wrong
[Ab] But maybe it's the old [Db] way
[Fm] Talk about your [Db] revolution
[Ab] [Eb] It's Independence [Ab] Day
