_ _ _ _ _ I'm Chris Veltri.
I run and operate Groove Merchant Records here in San [Gb] Francisco, California.
[F] Started in 1990 by a couple named Mike and Jody McFadden.
And _ it was from day one kind
of a collector's shop.
Before there was really boutique shops, before that was even really
a term.
They started it pretty much primarily just with a focus on soul, funk, jazz, kind
of rare Latin records.
I'm going to show you five records that have come in recently that
_ are on the rare side, things that are representative of the sound that we like to offer here.
This
is a record by _ a local legend named Durando.
[Eb] _ It's a track called [Am] Dinai.
_ [Gm] He recently passed
away.
[Bb] He was known in [Am] the city here, but outside of the [Gm] city, his career really never
took off.
[Bb] We had been looking for him for a long [F] time, trying to find him.
Some friends
of [Bb] mine and I had to figure out what _ other things he might have done.
[F] And for years [Gm] went
by, nobody could track him down.
And then a friend of mine, Justin [Bb] Torres, tracked him
down [E] and a reissue came out of [Dm] all his music and some unreleased music.
But this is the
one, [Bb] Dinai.
[E] One of the best ballads from San Francisco, [Gm] definitely. _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [F] This is another
record, great soul [Gm] album, _ Sam D's The Show Must Go On.
It has one song that's kind of
mid-tempo, stepper [Fm] song called Child of the Streets.
_ Another one that just comes and flies
out probably the [G] same week I get it in.
[Fm] Beautiful album by a guy that didn't do too much, [Bb] I
wish he did more.
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Db] _ _
_ [Am] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [C] _ Here's another [N] 7-inch that I just got in.
_ _ It's on the TwiNite label,
same label, home to Phil Johnson, Chicago label.
This is Package of Love by The Dynamic
Tints and it's just a really good [B] funky, soulful ballad.
[Gb] _ [F] _
Another one that will be in and out
the door probably in a [Db] few days. _ _
_ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ Yeah, [Db] _ _ _ _
this is another record that I like getting in.
[Eb] I never get it, I maybe get it once a year if I'm lucky.
It's by a guy named Donald Austin,
it's called Crazy Legs.
_ And [F] it came out on one of my favorite funk labels, Eastbound,
that [C] was kind of a _ [N] unique label that let more jazz [Em]-oriented artists that were [D] on Prestige,
[C] like Melvin Sparks, Houston Person, _ try to make a [Bb] funk record.
And that's [C] kind of what
this is.
It's a funk record.
Yeah, it's [D] great.
It's solid and kind of epitomizes what [F] we
like to hear here at the shop. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ So [F] this is a local boogie [G] record, soul record, kind of
funky.
_ _ [Abm] And the way I found out about it was there's a local R&B kind of quiet storm station
called KVLX that was _ located in the East Bay over in Berkeley.
[Bm] And [Gb] they were having a sale
of all the vinyl [Bb] from the station.
And I caught wind [Db] of it way after the fact.
And some of
the bigger stores had already been in there and [Fm] they had seen [Gb] that there was no Rolling
Stones or Velvet Underground.
So they were just like, [Bm] we're fucking out of here.
They
left.
[Abm] And I maybe came in two weeks after the [Bb] fact.
And right when I [D] walked in, there
was just amazing stuff just sitting on the ground. _ _
There was a $300 soul [Eb] record just
sitting there.
And I was like, how did they [E] leave all this stuff?
So I started going through
it and [Db] it was great.
There was just amazing records just left in there.
[D] Really, everything
was [Gb] five bucks a record.
And I came across this [Ab] record by Twilight.
And I was like, wow,
I don't think I've ever seen that.
I tried to track this guy down, [D] _ Lawrence Ross.
[Db] And
it took _ three years of just calling his ex-wife, other [Eb] members of the band.
Nobody knew where
he was.
We finally found him.
And he was up in Vallejo and he was super cool.
And he had
copies of this [Dbm] and his other record.
[Gbm] _ And [Eb] we set up a reissue for him through Love & Hate.
And they were [Db] released to the public again.
_ [D] _ _ _ _ [Db] _ _ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _
[Em] _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _
