[Em] [Am] Guitar is a very [B] personal instrument [A] because guitar has so many colors.
Guitar can be groove, bass, harmony, melody.
You can do a lot of things with [Gb] guitar.
I [B] picked up the guitar mostly because I wanted to start writing songs.
[F] To have someone relate to either [Gb] your melodies or lyrics or the way you just play the instrument.
That is one of the best things about playing music.
[G] When I was young, I had a theory book and that was the first time I saw the music [Em] notation.
And I was [F] just so fascinated and [Fm] blown away.
You know, once [Gm] music gets to you, there's no limitation.
[Bb] If you don't know something, [Eb] you just keep going after it until [Gb] you conquer that thing.
[E] [Bm] [Gb] Berklee is a great place for any person [E] who really wanted to learn music and the guitar.
[C] The heritage has [Am] always been honoring the past, being in the present, and looking for the future.
The vibe in the guitar department is unique.
There are about 60 guitar [E] faculty [A] and there are a lot of [Gb] different styles.
[G] [A] From heavy metal [Fm] to hardcore [Bb] bop.
In the guitar department, [D] the teachers, they are amazing.
They [F] are really supportive of where you're going with your music, what style you're doing.
[E] They are there for you.
Everything that [C] my students learn, I [G] want them to incorporate into their own [Bb] style.
How to use the chord, how to improvise with the [Ebm] scale, but really [G] to make it about the song, to make it [Ab] about their creative life.
[Db] Our department has a beautiful [Gb] balance of [Ab] the technical and the artistic.
You can really develop yourself and yet still cover a wonderful arsenal of [Gb] tools and techniques.
I [B] think one of the best things about Berklee is [Db] that you really shape your own [G] artist path from all the teachers and faculty here.
Before I [Em] came to Berklee, I thought I was going to be a songwriter [C] and just focus on my guitar, comping and stuff.
But then I came here and they gave me all this [B] knowledge and all these colors that I could use.
And that changed my music.
It made it more diverse.
[Am]
[Bbm] Every [Bb] year we bring in visiting artists to the [Bbm] guitar department that they know from records, that they [B] know from [Db] concerts,
and that it all [E] connects back into something that they're learning in the classroom.
[E] Berklee is the place to be.
My favorite thing was to get a room and then [D] you just invite friends or a friend invites you to play.
I learn a lot just hanging [Ab] with my peers.
One of [Gb] the most valuable things that Berklee has is its diversity.
[A] [Db] And just the students that come from all over the globe [E] in the same classroom.
It's a [Ab] community.
It's not a [B] competition.
It's love, [Db] sharing.
So people are willing [Eb] to learn from each other.
So you can come here and you can be in the largest guitar department on earth and not feel like you're lost.
You feel that [F] legacy of community and real excellence.
I [Eb] tell every student that what they listen to and what they study becomes [C] their style.
They can have their own [Eb] sound and be recognizable and be able to have a stamp on the music [Cm] industry.
Being able to convey an emotion that someone can relate to through music is [G] one of the best feelings.
[F] And I think Berklee has given me all the tools to succeed out [Cm] in the real world.
You have so many options and they prepare you so well that you can just do anything.
Guitar is just an instrument but when you pick [C] it up you can just create and have your own music and hopefully [Bb] it will touch other people.
