Guitar Lesson: Ola Englund on chord voicings for seven-string chords
Start Jamming...
Hi, I'm Ola Englund.
I play in the bands Feared and The Haunted and you're watching Total Guitar.
So with a seven string guitar
I can combine both the drop tuning and having my standard guitar.
I mean the
higher six strings is a standard E.
So I still have that but I also have the possibilities of
using lower notes with the seven string.
So I keep the seven string in drop A
while keeping the rest of the guitar in standard E and
with that I can make
super complex and big sounding chords all over the fretboard.
[E] So here I have the root and fifth, the regular power chord, [D]
but with a drop tuning you get the
root, you get the fifth and the octave with just one finger.
So you're basically freeing up your other fingers to do whatever you want with.
So you can make really big sounding chords like
And
[C#m]
[A]
[E] this is something I really utilize a lot with my band Feared to get that overly dramatic feeling
with all those big chords.
So that's why I mainly play seven strings to be able to have that range and
using a drop tuning [D#]
so I can free up my fingers for all kinds of different
stupid stuff.
So here are those same chords, but with a clean channel setting so you can actually hear [D] what I'm playing.
