Hi, my name is Robert Johnson.
You can call me Bob.
I've posted a number of videos on YouTube
discussing how to fingerpick.
The basic fingerpicking pattern.
[B]
One of my videos, the original, already has
five million views.
So it's been useful.
Most of the videos
feature [A] chords [F] C,
[Bb] F, [C] and G.
But [G] I've had many requests to do similar videos
[C] using the chords G,
[F] C, [D] and [G] D.
[C]
Let's get started.
I'll first point [G] out that I have my capo [E] on the 5th fret.
One of the nice features of playing the G [D] chord, by the way,
[N] is you get to do the G-C [C] thing.
[F] [C] [F] [C]
Where you can hammer on the C chord using these [Gb] two fingers.
Maybe a disadvantage [G] is that the D chord
is often played using only four strings.
So it makes it a little tight when you're alternating the bass.
We'll talk about [N] that more later.
Well then, how do we play
the basic fingerpicking pattern?
With these patterns, it's best to break them down into two parts.
Here's the first part.
[C]
That's it.
The thumb plays that 6th string.
And with your thumb and the middle finger,
[Bb] pinch [C] strings 4 and 2.
And with your index finger,
play the 3rd string.
So this is it again.
That's the first part.
The second part,
with your thumb,
[Gm] play the 6th [C] string.
Middle finger, 2nd string.
[G] Thumb, 4th string.
And index [C] finger, 3rd string.
[Gm]
[C]
[G]
[C] OK, put them together.
Practice for a long time.
It may take a few hours of practice.
Then try it with a song.
You are my sunshine.
My only sunshine.
I play the G7 there.
[F] Let me alternate the bass with my ring finger.
When skies [C] are grey,
You'll never [F] know, dear,
How much I [C] love you.
Please don't take [G] my sunshine [C] away.
Notice I use my thumb there on the 2nd fret.
When playing the D chord,
that gives me a fuller, richer bass.
Please don't take my sunshine [C]
away.
So that's another thing you can do with the D chord.
[N] But there are many things you can do
to make that D chord more interesting.
Different turnarounds and runs.
And you can vary the finger picking pattern too.
All kinds of inventive things.
But that's another [C] video.
OK, after you've been practicing for hours,
you're getting blisters on your fingers now.
Pick up the tempo a little bit.
And let's try it with a faster song.
Maybe we'll try it with
How about
Let me tell you a story about a [F] man named Charlie
On a tragic and fateful [G] day.
He put [C] incense in his pocket, kissed his [F] wife,
and family went to ride on [G] the [C] Yankee hay.
Will he ever return?
No, [F] he'll never return.
And [C] his fate is still [G]
unproved.
[C] Charlie he met right forever
Neath [F] the streets of Boston.
He's the [C] man [G] who'd never [C] return.
Here's another one by the Kingston Trio.
Remember them?
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song.
[F] It takes a worried man to sing a worried [C] song.
It takes a worried B7 [E] to To what?
To sing [Am] a worried song.
I'm worried [F] now, but I won't be [C] worried long.
You can learn to finger pick this very simple song.
[F] I can teach you how to pick this very simple [C] song.
Go to my website, it [Em] won't take [Am] very long.
Click on the link, then practice [C] all night long.
