Gunger is a band that plays what we call liturgical post-rock.
Musically, it's somewhere [G] between maybe like [D] Sigur Rós, a little bit of Muse, a little
bit of Sufjan Stevens, but then we say liturgical [G] because we sing a [D] lot about God, we sing church
music, but maybe church music differently than you've heard.
[F#m]
[G] [D]
The band consists of myself and my wife, Lisa, [A#] and [Am] Brad Waller, and Josh [A] Harvey is the [Gm] newest addition.
[B] Lisa [Cm] [G] actually is one [Gm] of the other primary songwriters [A] for the band.
I write [Cm] most of my stuff with her.
[Gm] Most of the time if [A] either of us are writing a song, we [Cm] eventually take it to the other person.
[Gm] I think our strategy is to [Am] get to a place where people [Cm] aren't really [Gm]
watching us.
I mean, it's such an
[G#] experience, it [G] is so worshipful that it's not about [Gm] us, it's not
what's going on on stage.
Obviously,
[D] we want the music [E] to [G] be the catalyst for that experience.
Depending [D] on where you see Gunger play, you might see four people or you might see ten
people [G] on the stage.
[D] The four of us are kind [E] of the core of what's happening, [G] but depending on what [D] kind of show
you come to, you might see more or less.
[G] Yeah, we're going to change [D] the name from Michael Gunger [Bm] Band to Gunger.
[B]
I really like it, it's a lot easier [G] to say.
It's not about [C#] you anymore, it's about the Michael Gunger [D] Show.
It looks a lot better on a t-shirt.
Beautiful Things is the record I produced this time, just myself.
There's something I like about when we make records, we've done both of our records [A] in
houses, actually, [D] rather than renting out a studio.
It felt really good to do that instead of [C#] go to a studio, [G] because we slept there, we
ate there, we lived there, [E] so if someone [Bm] had a creative idea, [G] you could just record it.
Everybody is already there, you're just kind [D] of perpetually immersed in this [A] creative environment,
and you have the [Bm] ability to capture it.
I feel like it's a [G] different direction for us, and for this one I feel like the [D] songs
are much more true to who we are, and I feel [A] like it's exactly what we want to say.
[F#m] The writing for this record, [Bm] I was writing for a few years, I guess, and had all [G] sorts
of songs, I don't know how many.
We cut [A] and cut and cut and got it down to 13, which is still a lot of songs, [D] but they're
songs that I feel like really are accurately reflective of where we were.
[F#m]
[Bm]
[D]
I really felt like we need to start being more intentional about creating what we want to create.
With the name change and [F#m] everything, we're going to plan these [Bm] events, and we're doing
five of them this spring, [D] the Beautiful [G] Things events.
It's going to be very different than anything [D] we've ever done or ever seen, actually.
It's going to be worship, but not what you would [G] expect, maybe.
They're [C#] going to be in music [G] venues rather than [D] churches, kind of taking it outside of
the church walls.
I hope that with this record and with our [F#m] music, that we can kind of [A]
break [D] some of those
boxes that maybe people think of when they think of praise and worship music or church
music or Christian music.
[Am]
But we just decided to just be honest and be [D] ourselves and not try to [G] fit into a mold,
and hopefully others will like it.
[D]
[Bm] [D]
Yeah!
