_ _ _ [N] Hello friends and YouTube subscribers.
[G] PianoRyland at gmail.com back with you [N] today at the request of Mike W.
Mike W [E] asked if I would do just a brief little tutorial on the song Had It Not Been.
I looked for a version online.
There were some folks who were in a vocal group singing [F] and I took the chords from there in the [B] key of C.
[N] _ If I'm not mistaken, the song was written [Ab] by Rusty Goodman or the Goodman family a number [G] of years [Gb] ago and also made popular by [G] the Gaither group.
So all the credit and [Gm]
copyrights go to them of course.
[Gb] There is nothing [Bb] that I have to claim [G] on that.
It's not my own.
I don't do anything with it.
I'm just merely [Ab] outlining the chords and helping some of you all if you would like.
We're going [G] to keep this video very [Gb] simple and straightforward and you can [Eb] email me at pianoryland at gmail [E]
.com if you would [Bb] like to go a little more in [Gb] detail or in depth.
And we can do that at another time.
So in the key of C major.
[A] _ _
_ _ _ [C] No sharps, no flats.
All [C] white keys. _
_ [F] _ _ _ _ [G] _ G major.
[C] Back to C major.
C, F, and G are our primary chords.
Let's [Cm] just go right from the start.
Just suppose God searched through heaven.
[E] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ [C] _ Going on to the chorus. _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _
So that was the verse and the chorus portion.
And I'm keeping my fingers back out of the way as much as possible so you can see the notes that [N] are being used and pressed.
So let's just go through briefly some of [G] the chords that we had from the start.
[Bb] Just suppose God searched through heaven.
[C] So it's a C chord. _ _ _
C, E, and G.
_ _ Just suppose. _
[F] _ And here they move to an F chord.
[C] But it stays over [F]
C in the bass.
So F, A, C in the right hand _ _ [C] resolves to C.
And _ couldn't find one willing to be. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ Willing to be it switches to G major.
G, B natural, D natural.
All over G.
_ And we go back to C major.
The supreme sacrifice.
C, E, and G.
_ [F] Do the same pattern where they put the F, A, and C [C] over. _ _
Supreme [F] sacrifice that was [C] needed. _ _
_ _ That would buy _ _ eternal [G] life.
Eternal life.
We have G in the bass.
And in the right hand G natural, D natural, [E] D natural, F sharp.
F natural, not F sharp.
F natural.
All white keys. _
_ Eternal life for you and [C] me.
Back to C, E, and G.
Now we start the chorus portion.
Had it not been.
[F] _
_ _ So it's F major, A, and C.
Not been.
For a place.
I [C] won't have C, E, and G.
We're seeing the bass.
Had it not been.
Still C major.
For the old rugged [G] cross.
G major which has G natural, B natural, D natural.
_ Had [F] it not been.
So that's F major or four if you want to call it that.
Subdominant.
F, A, natural, C natural.
Not been.
For a man called [C] Jesus.
We're back to resolving into C. _ _ _ _ _ _
And the last line of the chorus.
Forever _ [G] my soul.
So it's G, B, D, F natural.
That's a G7 chord.
My [C] soul would be lost.
And it all resolves to the end of that chorus.
Back to C major.
C natural, E natural, G natural.
Now that's a very, very simple form.
Let's start with that.
[E] Memorize those chords.
Get those chords comfortable under your fingers.
And if you would like you can email me at P-I-A-N-O [A]-R-Y-L-A-N [Ab]-D at _ [N] gmail.com.

[Bb] Thank you as always for [E] listening and subscribing.
[Ab] Look forward to hearing from [E] you specifically soon.
And hope you
