My name is Hans Greuner.
I am from Austria, the city of Braunau, the home
city of Adolf Hitler.
But don't hold that against me.
Anyway, I grew up playing
accordion very young.
I think I was two.
I could barely hold it, of course, but it
was fun.
I heard the first jazz that I heard when I was seven.
[Cm]
[Eb] I did not like it.
[Gb]
For the most part I still do not like it, but when [N] I was 10 I heard Thelonious
Monk, who I did not like.
But as I grew a little older I discovered that there was
some great potential in the music of Monk, and if only certain
elements of it were changed.
His notes were very, some of them very wrong
sounding and dissonant.
Also the rhythms were not right.
So from the age of about
20 I decided to take on a project of making the music of Monk more accessible.
And so every day I put the Monk record on [G] my record player and
tried to find the spots where I did not like the [N] music, which were many, and I
started to change them.
I'll show you an example of how I come to the concept of
the Monk interpretation.
[Bbm]
[Gb] [Db] [Eb]
[D] I cannot listen [Bbm] to more.
Okay, Gnuk, [F] how [Gb] do you turn this off?
[Db]
And now my interpretation [C] of Monk's Well You Needn't.
I think you will like
it as much as I know I will.

[A] My music breathes calmness and serenity, and when I combine it
with the music of Monk, [N] this to me is what Monk was trying to do.
