Hey, what's going on guys?
I'm Josh Ward.
I'm the drum instructor here at worshipartistry.com.
In this video, we're gonna be looking at the song
Happy Day by Tim Hughes off of his album
Holding Nothing Back.
And the grooves that I wanted to go over in this lesson
are just gonna be the intro, chorus,
and turnaround sections.
So if you wanna check out this full lesson,
you can click on the bottom right-hand corner
of your screen, that's gonna take you over
to worshipartistry.com, where you can check out
this full lesson and many more.
And we just go through these with verse, chorus, bridge,
check out all the fill concepts.
And we also have loops and charts that you can practice
along with these songs as well.
So right now, let's go ahead and hop into this lesson.
All right guys, let me go ahead and run through
the intro to this song and how we start off.
Now this intro is broken up into two different sections.
We've got kind of more of a simple section,
and then we have just a bigger section.
So let me hit this first one,
just so you can see how it should look and sound.
We'll break it down and count it out.
[N]
All right, so not too complicated.
All we've got going on here is just a kick and snare
combo groove, okay?
And we're counting this part in eighth notes, okay?
So the eighth notes are just gonna be
one and two and three and four and, okay?
So let's jump into it.
We're just gonna start off with a big crash, okay?
So it's just gonna be one and two and three and four
and one, okay?
So we're gonna jump on and one with our kick,
and then we're gonna alternate back and forth
between the one, okay?
So it's just gonna be one and two and three and four
and one and two and three and four
and one and two and three and four
and one and two and three, okay?
So this is a four bar intro section,
and on that fourth bar, we're gonna stop on beat three,
and there's a bit of a rest,
and then we're just gonna slam in really hard
for the next section on beat one, okay?
So that's the first half of this groove.
So let me go ahead and run through this for you.
Again, slow it down so you can lock into it,
and then we'll move forward with the next groove.
All right, guys, so this next section of the intro,
after that break,
and we just slam in big on this next section,
it's just a more energetic intro,
a bigger section of the song,
so we're really gonna be hammering down on this section.
But it's also gonna be the same groove
that we're playing in all of the chorus sections
and all of the turnaround sections, okay?
So let me go ahead and run through this groove
so you can see how it should look and sound,
and we'll break it down and talk it out.
[Eb]
All right, so again, not too complicated.
It's just at a faster tempo,
so it can be a little more difficult to keep up with.
But really, all we're doing is we're holding down
that same kick and snare combination
that we were playing for the first part of this intro, okay?
And the only thing we're doing next
is adding eighth notes on a washy hi-hat, okay?
So it's just gonna be one and two and three and four and.
Okay, so all together, it's just gonna be
one and two and three and four and one and two and [G] three
and four and one, okay?
So that's gonna keep going
[N] throughout this section of the intro.
And again, like I said, this is gonna be the same groove
for the second part of the intro,
all of the chorus sections,
as well as the turnaround sections.
Now, in the turnaround sections
that take us from the chorus to the next verse,
we're just gonna hop over to our ride
and just really wash those turnaround sections out
really heavy, okay?
So it's just kinda like a transitional piece
between the chorus and the verse, okay?
So I'm gonna go ahead and slow this down for you
one more time so you can lock into it.
[Ab]
[Eb]
All right, [G] guys, we'll be sure to get locked
into the loops below.
Check out the charts if you need to.
And once you dial these grooves in,
let's move it over and check out the verse groove.
