[N] Remember that one?
Happy Together, 1967, The Turtles?
This is a pretty cool tune, very simple.
And what we're going to do in this free lesson is just talk about the chord progression.
All you've got to do is strum through it and sing it.
I have a more detailed lesson in the Target program where we talk about the fancy picking
that I just did right there.
But for the free lesson, all you need to do is grab the chart that has the chords at the
top, the words at the bottom, and this is going to be kind of the campfire version,
strumming through this song and just singing the song.
So they did it with a capo at the second fret, but I'm going to do this without it for now
just so you can hear what it sounds like when we just strum through the chords and sing the song.
We need chords that you're probably familiar with.
E [Em] minor, second and third fingers on the fifth and fourth strings, D, [D]
C, [C] and B.
If you can
play the barred [E] B, barred the second fret [B] in an A shape, that's the best way to do it,
whether you play it with the double bar or with all three fingers lined up in the [N] A shape.
If you have trouble with that chord, you can use B7 for the Bs.
So here's what the verse [Em] would sound like.
Two measures of B [D] minor, two measures of D, two measures [C] of C, and I'm going to use the
B7 right now.
[B] B in the second verse.
[Em] I should call you up, invest a dime, and you [D] say you belong to me, and ease my mind, imagine
[C] how the world could be so very fun, so happy [B] together.
Now [Em] as far as the strumming goes, you just have to keep up a regular pattern of a quarter
note on the first beat and then eighths on the rest.
One, one, two, and three, and [A] four, and.
Down, down, up, down, up, down, up.
In swing time.
Brief explanation of swing time means that you're playing the downs and the ups not equally.
Straight time [Em] would sound like this.
For swing time, the ups are slightly delayed.
I'm emphasizing it a little [N] bit too much probably right there.
Instead of one, two, and three, and four, and, think to yourself the ands are late.
One, two, and three, and four, and one.
[D]
[C]
[B] The verse is just that eight measure section and the [A] chorus is just a four measure section
with an E chord.
[E] Make sure to notice it's not E minor now.
We go to E major for the, I can't see me loving nobody.
There we go.
I can't see [Bm] me loving [E] nobody but you.
[F#] Way up there.
Anyway, so it's E to B minor.
Now for B minor you really have to play the bar chord.
So we need a full bar at the second fret and then our A minor shape of a chord.
So if you're not quite up to playing bar chords yet, work on them.
Because in this song you need B minor and B major or at least B minor and [Bm] B7.
And then [E] back to E and then back to G.
[A] And that's really all that's [N] happening in there.
At the very end of the song, so we have two verses and then a chorus
and then a third verse and a chorus.
And then there is this outro that goes on and on and on and on forever
and they're talking about how is the weather and all that kind of stuff.
So, and for that part we need E minor and B [Em] just back and forth.
[B] [Em]
[B] [Em] E minors and I'm using B7 [B] again right now and it just keeps doing that [Em] until it fades out.
So, that's really all it takes.
Strum the chords, sing the song and have fun.
And again, if you'd like to see the more detailed version where I talk about the picking
[E] [Em] [N] you can also just try to work that out by yourself.
I think I played through it up at the top.
So it's just a matter of picking out little single melody notes
but a very detailed explanation of all that is available on the longer lesson
that we have here in the TARGET program.
So, as it is, hope that gets you started on Happy Together.
Be sure to check the original Pick Up the Turtles album.
It's on a whole bunch of greatest hits albums
but it's really important to listen to the original
and don't forget they're capoed at the second fret
so you'd have to put a capo at the second fret to be in their key
and to get everything to work out.
So, that's it for today's look
