[E] Thomas Dorsey, known as the father of gospel music, was a planter.
[B] The fruits of that harvest were the exceptional [D] singers who spread gospel around the world.
Mahalia [Db] Jackson, Aretha Franklin, James Cleveland are but a few.
[C] In the last 40 years, gospel music has undergone a tremendous metamorphosis.
[Eb] From the hymns and spirituals of the early settlers and slaves, the genre has grown [D] from
a musical style with very little variation to a sound that reflects the diversity and
complex technology [B] of the 21st century.
So, whether it's swaying with the choir or a cappella [Eb] with the quartet, or simply raising
hands to the rhythm of [G] the soul-stirring praise, [Eb] gospel is one genre of music that needs to
be both seen and heard.
