I'd like to thank you all again for being here.
It was really special.
And I won't soon forget it.
And I'd like to thank the guys at Austin City Limits for having us.
I'm not the type of songwriter that really sits down with an idea.
I just sort of [E] sit down and however I'm feeling turns into something, you know?
[D] I've never [F#] been a topical songwriter.
[F] It just doesn't seem to work that [F#] way.
But a few things kind of hit me at once.
I'd seen Townes Van Zandt in Minneapolis.
I was probably [D#] 27 maybe.
With Guy Clark.
I'd never seen them before.
[F#] I was working as a [G] carpenter there with my uncle.
And he came home with tickets and he was all excited.
I said, what do you got man?
He's like, [N] Townes Van Zandt.
I said, you never heard of Townes Van Zandt?
I said, no.
So we went and I was in tears.
It was amazing.
Just an amazing, amazing experience.
And so maybe three months after that, he died.
So it made a real impression on me at the time.
And [F#] shortly after that, Johnny Cash died.
And all these things I think combined just put me in a weird, sad spot.
[A] [E] I was feeling down and [D] I wrote this.
All my heroes have gone.
[G]
[A] Let all them saints wear [D] the flaming.
The junkies and the whores.
[G] All behind them.
[Bm] [A] I guess I'm going to go.
[G]
[D] All my heroes have gone.
[G]
[A] Let all them righteous jewels take to [D] shoveling coal.
The killers and the con.
The [G]
[Bm] pushers and the jaunt.
[A] With halos, wings and just a hovering overcast.
[D] [G] So mama, don't [D] you cry.
[G] When I'm [D] dead and gone.
[G] Because Jesus [D] loves his sinners.
[A] And heaven is a [D] home.
[G] [D]
[G] [D] Now all my heroes have [G] gone to heaven.
[A] The liars and the gamblers and [D] the fools.
The drunkards and the thieves.
[G] All wearing silk upon [Bm] their spears.
[A] And every gal is like a silver [D] pearl in bloom.
[G] So mama, [D] don't you cry.
[G] When I'm [D] dead and gone.
[G] Because Jesus loves [D] his sinners.
[A] Yes, and heaven is a [D] home.
So [G] mama, [D] don't you cry.
[G] When I'm [D] dead and gone.
Because Jesus loves [A] his sinners.
[G] Yes, and heaven.
Heaven is a [D] home.
[G] Heaven is a home.
[D] Heaven is a home.
[D] Thank you.
[N]
God bless.
Thank you.
