[D] Hi I'm Monica from Heavy Magazine and we're here at Unify at [Eb] 2018 with Make Them Suffer.
[D] How are you guys going?
Awesome, awesome.
Good, now you guys got in pretty late last [Eb] night.
Tell us about setting up the tent [Bbm] and how was that for you?
I know [G] it rained pretty hard last night so how did it go?
I'm actually quite experienced in the tent setting up field.
I see.
So I [D] managed to get through it alright.
It was a bit, it was difficult.
Not unusual, our tent is broken [Bb] now.
That's the [F] quality of the tent, it was a $20 [Gm] Kmart deal.
$12, there you go.
There you go.
No it does the job.
We just put one of the punch hoses that they're giving over, [E]
over the front zip.
[Eb] Very very technical.
[Bb] Everything inside is soaked and we are stoked about it.
[D] Well I think everyone's kind of in the same boat this weekend.
Everyone's just kind of going with the flow here.
But [G] yeah, so you guys [Eb] had an absolutely massive [D] year last year.
So I think it was, was it 140 shows that you guys played?
141.
141, yep yep.
[Eb] 0.5.
Yep and, [C]
I would have done [G] 140 then.
Is that one hour?
Yeah, [Eb] the power cut off.
There you go.
[D] So it was like 140.5, yep I get that.
Yeah, sick.
So, [Eb] and you also did a headline tour, [Bb] so how was that?
That was amazing.
[G] Oh sorry, I've got this one up [Gm] here.
That was really good.
[D] No it was [Bbm] really good, it was about, it was about, it was about, it was about, it was
Let's [G] say five sold out shows.
Fans were crazy.
I've never seen so many [D] people rock out so hard before.
There were a few.
Me especially.
There were a few [Bb] sold more shows.
I'm just talking about the Australian headlining show.
Because that's the important one for our fans and our people.
[Eb] It was great.
So the first [Bb] half of the year, first half of the year was, it was, [Bb] they were all tours
before the World's Part album came out.
So everything [F] after the release were basically headliners.
So we did one [Eb] in Australia, one in Europe [Gm] and another one in the US.
But yeah, Australia was obviously like by far, by far the [D] best.
Does it feel like coming home when you kind of do a tour around Australia?
Yeah.
Yeah, being away for so long?
Yeah, absolutely.
Especially this year because there was a [Eb] huge jump in, I think [G] before World's Apart had
come out, we were easily doing [Eb]
really small [Bb] sized rooms quite easily.
[F] But I think the World's [D] Apart [Gm] release, I know it was pretty much a [D] statement.
It was pretty much a statement for us.
We've definitely gotten to the next plateau.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, that album, it's your third album, is that right?
Yeah.
I mean, that album, it just feels like you guys have just really, really stepped up.
Did you approach this album in a different way to other albums?
I know lyrically [C] it's
Yeah, I would say there was a [Eb] different writing process that we sort of went through.
I think we were just kind of like
I just said to
I think we were just kind of a bit more open about the way that we wrote the thing and
had less sort of
We felt less constrained [Dbm] by creative boundaries.
I think it was just kind of like, does it sound good?
[Eb] Yes, let's use it sort of thing rather than is that a make them suffer thing.
So from that, we were able to kind of push our boundaries, I think, and change our sound a bit.
Is that because you guys have spent so much [G] time touring and you've really locked in with
each other and has that helped a lot?
[D] Yeah, I mean, that definitely [Am] goes a long way.
I think the live thing and the writing process are two completely separate entities in a way.
Or [A] like, not entities, that's the wrong word, but I can't think of the right one right now,
so I'm going with that.
But [F] yeah, they're two separate things, but at the same time, spending a lot of time [C] together
[G] does
Creative [A] differences and manage to formulize and work out something that's going to please
everyone and make everyone happy sort [E] of thing.
So yeah, spending a lot of [Dbm] time together definitely helps.
Yeah, awesome.
And I know you're relatively [C] new to the band.
Did you join in
Was it June of last year?
That's
Yes, I mean, we were doing the album [Db] before that and I toured [G] Europe [Eb] with the guys in February.
But yeah, it was all sort [Dbm] of like announced and everything in June.
[Db] Yeah, it was June.
[A] So yeah, pretty fresh, like sort of started, I guess, this time last year with recording
the album and like getting
Also, we hadn't finished it [Eb] when we started recording it either.
There were still parts that we were sort of trying to work out and nut out and things
that didn't [Db] work.
It was always like the craziest new [G] experience for me.
[A] Yeah, you got thrown pretty much in the deep end.
Yeah, it was like they found the deepest point of the ocean and just [A] dropped into the deep
Yeah, I wish I could have done that.
[Db] Hey, just jump in to 700 people for my first show.
[A] Yeah, I don't know, like you say [G] that, but you say that.
I thought that I was probably
I mean, I just remember [Ab] the whole time just don't stuff up in [Eb] my head.
It was just on repeat [C] for about 30 minutes and I was terrified.
[Eb] But it was [Db] awesome.
Like I came off and it was out of the way.
And yeah, [C] from then on, it's been just fine.
So [Bb] yeah.
So you are playing tonight [A] at Unify, obviously.
Have you had much of a chance to check out some of the other bands or has it all been
kind of go, go, go today?
We got a few friends here today.
I [E] don't think like when you've been doing once [Cm] you've been around the touring circuit
for a while, you kind of just like appreciate just doing wandering time.
[D] Like I just like to know me personally.
I just like to walk around and just like [A] look at stuff.
And then like you'll watch a band on the way sort of thing.
So, yeah, you do get to do that.
But my like I don't know me personally, [Bm] I'm not sure about Sean or Booker, but you know,
I just like wandering [Dbm] around.
It's crazy at a festival like this because, you know, it's like [E] being an Australian
festival [B] and you've all like played shows and toured [A] with all these bands.
So a lot of it's just like, oh, dude, I haven't seen you forever.
[E] What's up?
It kind of feels like [B] a summer camp.
Like [Dbm] everyone getting together again.
School excursion.
Yeah.
Awesome.
And what [B] can people expect from your set tonight?
[A] Try not to slip over on the stage.
Nice, nice.
But we'll get a lot of baby powder on there and soak up the water.
That's a really good idea.
And we've got the towel techs out there.
They're going to wipe it all up, mop it all up so we don't slip over.
Excellent.
Have you guys got [E] Oompa Loompas as well?
Because [Dm] Parkway had Oompa Loompas.
Yeah, no, [Eb] we've got something bigger and better than that.
Maybe not bigger in scale, but [E] it's a surprise and I don't [D] give out secrets, you know.
Well, stay tuned, [G] everyone.
We're going to have to go now and just quickly figure out.
Yeah, let's head to the main night.
I mean, I can say that.
We have to go find someone.
You guys have really, really built this up.
So I know we're going to look forward to it, I guess.
Thanks, Jai.
[Ab] That's great.
There wasn't enough pressure already to do a good show.
[Dm] Maynard said he's keen to do a song, so he's going to [C] come down.
So all you Tool fans out there, better watch [G] us, 740, Maynard and Make Them Suffer.
There you go.
Well, you heard it here first on Heavy TV.
So [A] thank you guys so much for chatting to us [Gm] today and we'll catch you [Em] guys tonight.
Cool, [F] see you then.
See ya.

But [G] yeah, so you guys [Eb] had an absolutely massive [D] year last year.
So I think it was, was it 140 shows that you guys played?
141.
141, yep yep.
[Eb] 0.5.
Yep and, _ [C]
I would have done [G] 140 then.
Is that one hour?
Yeah, [Eb] the power cut off.
There you go.
[D] So it was like 140.5, yep I get that.
Yeah, sick.
So, [Eb] and you also did a headline tour, [Bb] so how was that?
That was amazing.
[G] Oh sorry, I've got this one up [Gm] here.
That was really good.
[D] No it was [Bbm] really good, it was about, it was about, it was about, it was about, it was
Let's [G] say five sold out shows.
_ Fans were crazy.
I've never seen so many [D] people rock out so hard before.
There were a few.
Me especially.
There were a few [Bb] sold more shows.
_ I'm just talking about the Australian headlining show.
_ We've definitely _ gotten to the next plateau.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, that album, it's your third album, is that right?
Yeah.
I mean, that album, it just feels like you guys have just really, really stepped up.
Did you approach this album in a different way to other albums?
I know lyrically [C] it's_
Yeah, I would say there was a [Eb] different writing process that we sort of went through.
I think we were just kind of like_
I just said to_
I think we were just kind of a bit more open about the way that we wrote the thing and
had less sort of_
We felt less constrained [Dbm] by creative boundaries.
But [F] yeah, they're two separate things, but at the same time, spending a lot of time [C] together _
_ [G] does_
Creative [A] differences and manage to formulize and work out something that's going to please
everyone and make everyone happy sort [E] of thing.
So yeah, spending a lot of [Dbm] time together definitely helps.
Yeah, awesome.
And I know you're relatively [C] new to the band.
Did you join in_
Was it June of last year?
That's_
Yes, I mean, we were doing the album [Db] before that and I toured [G] Europe _ [Eb] with the guys in February.
But yeah, it was all sort [Dbm] of like announced and everything in June.
[Db] Yeah, it was June.
[A] So yeah, pretty fresh, like sort of started, I guess, this time last year with recording
the album and like getting_
Also, we hadn't finished it [Eb] when we started recording it either.
There were still parts that we were sort of trying to work out and nut out and things
that didn't [Db] work.
It was always like the craziest new [G] experience for me.
[A] Yeah, you got thrown pretty much in the deep end.
Yeah, it was like they found the deepest point of the ocean and just [A] dropped into the deep
Yeah, I wish I could have done that.
[Db] Hey, just jump in to 700 people for my first show.
[A] Yeah, I don't know, like you say [G] that, but you say that.
I thought that I was probably_
See ya.
[E] G'day, it's Jai here from Make Them Suffer.
_ _ Hello?
Hello, hello.
And you're watching [G] Heavy TV.
See you tonight.
_ _ And cut.
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _
