Hi, I'm Jo Sugumeli, and I'm going to be showing you some basic exercises that can help develop the skill of being able to play and sing violin at the same time.
But before we dive into that, there's a couple basics we should cover first.
Remember that you're going to use two instruments, both your voice and the violin.
That's a lot on your body, so get a good stretch out in before you start playing.
When setting up, make sure that your shoulder rest is set so that you can comfortably move your arms around in big circles.
This will promote larger use of the bow and overall relaxation.
Maybe throw in a little dance too, just to show it's safe.
So we're going to start off real simple with a one octave A major scale, starting on the low A on the G string.
While we do this, I'm going to put on a drone, which is just octaves of A.
And while we go up and down the scale, we can listen and see how in tune we are.
So here's that drone.
I hope it doesn't startle you.
So take some time to match it to your pitch.
Now we're going to go up the scale.

We have our A major scale, and what we're going to do is keep playing through it, [C] but when we get to the C sharp,

And that's going to sound like this.

So I'm going to put my drone [A] here back on, match my A.
