Hey guys, Jules Kane here, back again with another piano tutorial.
This time we're going
to briefly go over Hezekiah Walker's Grateful in the key of A flat.
[Eb] Starts off with this intro.
[Fm] [Ab]
[Db] [Ab] [Db]
[Ab]
[Db] [C] [Ab]
[Bbm] [Ab]
[Eb]
[Ab] [Bbm]
[Ab]
All right, so very simple chords.
You're doing an A flat, which is the one, [Bbm] a B flat minor,
which is the two, [Ab] A flat over C, which is the [Fm] three, and the D flat major seven, which is the
four.
[Eb] You do it again, [Ab] give that little, give that [Bbm] there, [Ab] flat minor, [Db] and when you get to this four,
I'm going to add this [C] identifiable lick.
[Bb] [C]
All right, and then you're going [Ab] to play this
with some chords.
You're going to do A flat, [Bbm] B flat minor, A [Bbm] flat, B flat minor,
[Ab] and A flat.
[Eb] So you're [C] adding [Ab] chords on top of that, and [Bbm]
[Ab] [Db] now you're going to do [D] this lick here,
[Abm] [D] [Eb]
but you're going to give it [Ab] a little bit of a bluesy feeling.
[Fm] Got it?
[Ab] And then we go back to the doubling up with the chords,
[Bbm]
[Ab] [Db]
and that gives it that [Ab] identifiable intro.
So the rest of the song's very, very easy.
Same chords,
[Db] [Db]
[Ab] A flat.
So [F] on the [Db] one, instead of just a regular D flat major [A] seven, you're going to be a D flat
sharp five, major seven [F] sharp five, which is just playing an F major [Db] chord on top of a D flat.
Then you're going [D] to go to this, an [C] F major nine to
[Cm] a C minor, [Fm]
to F minor, [Eb] E flat, [Ab] to D flat,
[Gm] G minor, [Bb]
[Cm] C minor, [Fm]
[Eb] [Ab] [Dbm]
[Ab] A flat over E flat, back to the D flat minor, [Ab]
[Eb] C minor,
[Fm] [Eb] [Db] [Db]
[Ab]
[Ab] and that's [Bbm] almost the whole song.
[Db]
Let's do it again.
[Eb]
[Ab] [Db]
[Eb]
[Ab] [Bbm] [Ab]
[F] [D]
[Cm] [Cm]

[Eb]
[Ab] [Dbm]
[Ab]
[Ab]
[Eb] [Fm]
[Eb] [Dbm] [Db]
[F] [Ab] All right.
And then we're going to build it up here after [Bbm] you play it twice.

[Eb] [Ab] [Gb]
[E] [Ab] then to an A flat over E flat, [Db]
D flat minor.
[Dbm]
[Ab]
[Dbm]
[Bb] [Eb] [Ab] Grateful, [Eb] [Dbm]
grateful, grateful, grateful, [Ebm]
grateful, grateful, [E] gratefulness [Db] [E] [Dbm]
[Ab] flowing from my heart.
[Db] All [Cm] the issues [Ab] of my [Dbm] heart [Db] is [Eb] gratefulness.
[Ab] That's the whole [Bbm] song.
[Ab]
[Abm] [G]
