Hello, Ryan here, and today I'm going to do a little tutorial on how to play the organ solo in the song Highway Star by Deep Purple.
I'll start by getting the sound I want.
I'm using a rock organ sound [A] with an effect, a distortion effect on the keyboard to get a nice [C]
[F] [C] distorted
[N] Right, the start's pretty simple.
It starts on an A, [A] then [Gm]
Bb, G, [Am] A, [E] A.
[N] And I'm sure you'll be able to pick up the rhythm from the song.
So it just [Am] goes like this.
[Gm] [A] [Gb] [F] It's a similar sort of pattern, though, not familiar.
It [A] goes G, [Am] A, A, [Bb] [A] Bb, A, G, [Fm] A, G, F, [G] G, A, G, F, G, A, G.
So that's how it goes.
[Dm]
[G] And then that whole first four bars [F] together [A] sound something like this.
[G] [Em] And this next bit is a tricky bit.
I like to think of it as chord progression.
So we start on an A, [Gbm] A, [C] C.
So that's an A minor second inversion.
[Am] So you just take some time to practice with the fingers slowly until it's smooth.
It also helps [A] if you use a [Am] metronome.
So you get
[N] and then speed it up a little bit.
[Am]
And so on until you get to the full speed.
So full speed it sounds something like this.
[E] And then the second pattern is E, G sharp, B.
So it's the second two notes moved down a semitone.
So you get an E major chord.
And then you [Dm] get D, [Gm] G, Bb.
So that's a G minor chord second inversion.
[D] And then a D major chord.
D, F sharp, [Am] A.
Then that pattern is repeated twice.
So all that together sounds something like this.
[E]
[Gm] [D] Then you repeat that [Am] again.
[E] [Gm] [D]
[Gbm] [N] And then this next section, this first one, [C] the first [F] pattern is C, F, A.
So an F major chord second inversion.
And on the fourth one you've got a little linking [G] pattern.
[F] And [G] then [Ebm] from there you move on to F minor [F] root position.
[C] [Gb] C, Bb, [A] A, [Dm] G, [Bb] A.
And then you move into D minor second [Dm] inversion.
[D]
F, then another linking pattern.
F, E, D, [Em] C, D, A.
And [Dm] then a D minor root.
[Gbm] And then you stop on an A.
So that [F] run goes as follows.
[G] [Dm]
[G]
Then there's a fairly simple bit.
The pattern goes Bb, A, G, G.
Bb, A, G, G.
[C] B, G, E, A.
B, G, E, A.
Sorry, the B, G, E ones, then [Am] A, G, E.
So [Dm] it goes like this.
[C]
[Em] [E] And then E, F, [G] E, D, [F] E, F,
[D] [G] E, F, E, D.
[Gb] [Bbm] C sharp, Bb.
[Bm] So you [Gm] [Em]
[Bb] [B]
[G] [Bbm]
[N]
get
a
D minor pattern.
Starts in D minor with D, D, C sharp, [Bb] Bb, A.
Play that twice.
[Am] Then it moves [C] into F minor.
Starting on the dominant C.
[Gm]
[C] Play that twice and then [Dm] keep moving down.
[C]
[Bb] [Am] [Gm] [F] [Em] [F]
[D] And when you get to the F, skip one and go into D minor again.
But you come back upwards instead of going down.
So [Db] D, C [Bbm] sharp, [Db] Bb, C [Dm] sharp, D.
So you get
[D] [N] this pattern played fast.
I'll try and do it.
[Gm] [C] [F]
[Bbm] [D] [C] [F] And then, I'm not sure if this is right, but I play it with the next chords.
So I play an F, [G] G chord, [F] another F, [Dm] then D, [F] and then that [G] pattern again.
[Dm] And then [C] there is a little run in both hands.
I can't play it with both hands because I've got the camera.
So it goes [Dm] C, [G] G, F, E, [Gbm] G, A, [C] C, [E] C, D.
[C] [Dm] And
[G] there's another little organ bit over the top.
I think it goes [Bb]
[G] [F]
[Em] [Bb] [C]
[Bb] [F] like
And then a similar pattern on the way down but you've got an Ab in it.
[A] So you've got [Dm] D, [C] C, [Am]
[Abm] A, Ab, [G] G, [Dm] F, D.
[C] Then I play a C chord there, C, [Bb] Bb.
[Gb] And [Fm] that's it.
So that last pattern together [G] is
[Dm] [C] [Dm] [G]
[C] [Bb] And [N] now if I put a backing track on my iTunes,
[D] [A]
[D] I'll just give you a final run through.
[Eb] I'll try my best, [Gb] seeing as I've got the camera in one [D] hand.
But here we go.
[E] [D] [Gm] [Am] [E] [Gm]
[D] [Am] [E] [Gm]
[D] [F] [Dm]
[A]
[Gm]
[F] [Dm] [N]

[Gm]
[F] [Dm] [N]

I think it goes _ _ [Bb] _
