_ _ [C] _ that [Am] version.
It is nice.
Should I keep going?
[C] No. Yeah. _
_ _ _ _ _
So, I mean, I don't know.
Are we going?
Yeah, we're going.
[Am] That was [F] the original _
[C] _ idea for Scandal of Grace.
I mean, it would've gone pretty late at night.
I think everyone was at dinner.
And I forced Benjamin Tenencoff, also [Am] lovingly known as [F] Tenny,
because there's many Tenny's [C] in this world.
But he stayed back with me [Em] because I just wanted to record [G] on my phone,
at least [C] that idea.
_ And we just played it [Em] through.
And at the time I showed [C] it to Joel and Mikey.
And I think, I mean, they both really loved the idea.
[G] But it was kind of like a little bit out of the picture from everything [Am] else
that was happening at the time.
So, I think we [F] just sat on it for a bit.
And I kept, I think I felt like I kept pushing.
I was like, I really feel like this could work.
It was a beautiful idea.
It was [C] just how was it going to fit.
Because I was like, I love it.
Like, I just don't know, like, where does it go?
And how does it fit in with [Em] everything else?
And it had no [G] answers.
And to be honest, we had worked on so many songs.
And we were kind of, you know,
we were doing these [F] crazy hours in this old abandoned warehouse.
You know, like rats and like, it was moldy.
It was like [C] the back of an old theater [F] in 100-foot [Am] ceilings,
_ [C] cement box, you know, in the Lower East Side of New York City.
And Matt would kind of get stuck.
Like, [Am] you'd be working on an idea.
And like sometimes it would, you know, [F] be flowing.
Everyone was kind [C] of like having a great time.
And then it kind of gets to the point where everyone would be like, _
anyone hungry?
Like, sure, you want to get some food?
Like, yeah, right.
And then one night, _ _
[Am] I guess, it [F] was just all of a sudden,
it was like there was a [C] piano there.
And I just started kind of playing something on [Em] it.
And it just kind of flowed.
This [F] chorus kind of just flowed out of [C] what he had.
_ _ And we were both like, oh, that kind of really [F] works.
And we just threw these [C] scratch lyrics down, _ _
[G] which actually kind of pretty much the chorus lyrics now.
It would be like, you [Am] know.
It was quite, it was still really swinging, like, [F] on the thing.
And then Mikey was like, well, if we're going to do it,
we need to kind of bring it into.
That was my biggest [C] frustration, the whole song was the swing part.
Like the original.
_ _ _ And if it stayed like that, [Em] it would not have been [G] on this album.
But, I mean, that's the genius of Mikey is knowing how to bring
something into _
[F] line with everything else.
Yeah.
So it kind of, we put it to the band,
and the band just kind of [C] brought it to life.
And we were trying to find a lyric for it and kind of what it was about.
And I had remembered this conversation I had with this guy.
And we were just talking about God.
Like, you know, [Em] there was this guy who wasn't a believer,
and [G] there was a guy who kind of, you know, like was a believer,
but like wasn't really into [F] church and stuff.
And we were just talking about the things of God and who God is, who Jesus is.
And I remember this guy [C] who was kind of like [D] the disgruntled believer kind of guy,
just going, yeah.
I mean, but to this other [C] guy who didn't believe.
Well, the thing is, [F] it doesn't make sense, mate.
Like [Am] that's the scandal of grace.
[C] And I'll never forget it.
I was like, exactly.
And I just love that _ thought, you know, the scandal of grace.
And [G] I think sometimes when we think about _ something that's scandalous, you know,
we think about something [Am] that is kind of like wrong or something that's happened.
Yeah, negative.
But I love the [F] paradoxical nature of the gospel.
And the fact is, you know, the grace of God through Jesus is [C] completely scandalous.
Like it's the reason they crucified _ Jesus, because of who he said he was
and what he was there [G] to do.
And it's the reason why even now so many people have a hard time accepting
[F] the love and grace of Jesus.
It's much easier to live by a set of rules, or it's much easier [C] to, you know,
like try and do all these good things to make your way to God,
but to think that he _ made his way to us.
And, you know, _ there's not [Em] enough good enough things we can [G] do to get to God,
or we have to do except the good thing that he did for us.
And [F] I love that.
And there's a scripture in Romans that just says, you know,
I will lay a stumbling block [C] in Zion, a rock of offense,
but whoever puts their trust in him shall never perish.
And I just love that picture, especially coming out of Cornerstone,
you know, that whole, you know, picture of Cornerstone and thinking,
[G] yeah, like the Cornerstone is actually a stumbling block,
because _ _ his grace is [F] so _ extravagant and just _ scandalous
that it can be hard [C] for us to accept it.
But that's faith and that's trust.
And, you know, I think this song is kind of really deep,
but I love, you know, the way the lyric kind of came together
and the message behind it.
