[Ab] _ _ [F] _ _ Alright, hold on, I'm coming.
One of my favorite songs.
Let's take a look at the intro.
So the intro is also the course and we're going to have three chords but with four bars.
So one bar is [Ab] on the A flat, G sharp. _ _ _ _
_ _ Then [B] we have a B. _
_ _ _ _ _ Then we [Db] have a C sharp.
And _ _ _ then [Eb] the last bar is back to the A flat, _ [Abm] _ _ _
G sharp, [Ab] the first chord.
Okay so _ next _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
_ [Db] _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ we're going to take a look at the verse.
So the verse is we're back on that A flat [Eb] and it's an A flat 7 _ and we're adding that
seventh fret on the B string with our pinky finger.
[Ab] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ And so what we're doing here is we're just on the 2, 3 and the 4 of the beat.
So 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, [Fm] 4.
And that third beat we're doing basically two 16th notes.
So [Ab] 1. _ _ _
_ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F] _
Okay, so it does that for four bars and then we go to the C sharp 7 and you [Db] can play it
this way or _ _ _ _ _ you can play it up here. _ _ _ _ _ _
It's all depending on how you decide to voice it but _ _ that's on the 9th fret.
So you can keep in this area of the neck on the 4th fret.
And it's just same rhythm as the first four bars of the verse.
On the 2, 1, _ _ 1, 2.
_ [F] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [N] And then it's into the chorus which is also the intro.
_ Okay so let's take a look at [Bb] the bridge.
So the bridge starts on a C sharp [Db] 7. _ _
You can play it with this voicing. _ _ _
You can play it up here on the 9th fret.
_ [Abm] And [Bb] it's quarter beats for four bars.
So we're just going to do and they're really [F] staccato and rooted.
_ [Gb] So we do four bars of that.
So let's count that out.
1, 2, _ [F] 3, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ 4.
_ [N] And then it goes to [B] a B _ and this is where Steve Cropper _ does one of his signature licks. _ _ _
_ _ _ So what I'm doing there is I'm just going from the 8th on the G string and the 7th on the high E string.
_ _ So I'm doing the major 3rd of the B. _
_ _ [A] And then that's what Steve Cropper was known for this signature lick.
And then we're sliding up to the 9th fret on the G, 9th fret on the high E.
And we hit those two strings at the same [B] time. _ _ _
And then we slide up [Ebm] _ _ _ to the 11th on the G, 11th on the high E.
And we hit the G string first.
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ That's kind of at tempo. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Eb] And then we do a C sharp _ and then an E flat or a D sharp. _
And then we're into the guitar solo.
_ [Ab] _ _
OK, so the last part of the song to really know is the solo for the guitar.
And we're on the G sharp on the D string.
So the 6th fret on the D string.
_ _ _ _ _ [N] _
_ Then we go to the [Gb] 4th fret. _ _
Back [Ab] up to the 6th.
Slide up to the 8th.
[Bb] _
Back down to the [Ab] 6th.
_ So let's play it at tempo.
_ _ _ _ [Gb] _
_ [Ab] _ _ _ And then we go [Gb] back down to the 4th.
[B] _ _ And then we go to the 4th on the G string.
And we hit that once. _ _
Go up to the 6th fret on the G [Db] string. _ _ _
_ _ [Ebm] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ [Abm] _ _ [Bm] So from the 4th fret on the G string up [Gb] to the 6th.
[Eb] Then to the 8th.
[Fm] Then to the 10th.
Back to the [Ebm] 8th. _ _
So the [Ab] whole solo. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ [Db] _
[Ebm] _ _ _ [Db] _ _ [Ab] _ _
And then it [Eb] goes back into the chorus, which is the intro pattern.
OK, so the chords underneath the guitar solo are A [Ab] flat.
_ _ _ [G] Then we [Gb] have an F sharp.
We _ _ [Ab] _ have a [B] B.
_ _ And [Db] then we have a C sharp. _
_ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _
_ [N] _ So that's happening underneath the guitar solo.
And another thing about this song is at the end it sounds [Ab] like_ _
_ [B] _ _ _ _ [Db] _ _ _
_ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _
So over the chorus, instead of just holding the chords, you can definitely do quarter beats.
You can do whatever you want.
But what I'm hearing for the guitar part is he's doing more shots to build up the song.
Get the dynamics stronger.
[G] So there you have it. _
_ One thing about this song, if you want to learn it, is the horn line, which is a great line.
[B] _ _ _ _ And that's just going from the 4th to the 2nd on the high E string. _
And then the 4th to the 2nd on the B string.
[Dbm] _ Back up to the [Eb] 4th.
_ [B] _ _ [Abm] So it's going down and then back up.
_ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ And so on.
So that's something you can [E] throw in there if you'd like to do.
Well there you have it.
Sam [Dm] and Dave's Hold On I'm Coming.
Such a great song to [G] play.
I love that song.
I've been playing it since high [A] school actually.
[D] And it never [E] gets old.
