[N] Hey gang, that was Hot Rod Lincoln, Commander Cody with Bill Kirchhan on guitar.
Bill is really the master of all those rockabilly licks, those fast ones.
He still is, he's a great player still.
Hey, we're going to be doing this note for note, at least what I did, note for note,
and up close and personal, but hey, wanted to wish [F] everybody a happy new year
[D#] and a public service announcement, don't be drinking, especially if you're going to be
driving one of those Hot Rod Lincolns.
Oh god, alright, see you in just a second.
Alright gang, let's go through this note for note.
First things first, you can download the tab from the description below.
It's going to make your life a lot easier.
Okay, second thing is the tone.
You know I'm playing this on a T-style guitar, playing out of that bridge pickup,
keeping it clean, need lots of twang on this one.
Alright, now for the chords.
The chords that this lick is played over are very simple.
We're just going to play two [E] bars of E, [A] two bars of A, two [B] bars of B,
[E] and back to two bars of E.
[F#] Alright, so [F] a very simple chord structure.
Over this one, what makes it tough is of course the breakneck speed that it's played at.
Alright, so let's go over the lick itself.
We can learn it note for note and then play it very slowly, slowly speed it up.
So we're going to start from the very beginning.
[G] [E] That little note there, a very cool note, a very common bend.
Essentially that one is on the sixth string.
We're going to bend it up somewhere between a quarter and a half step
and slowly release it back down.
Okay, so just like [G] so.
[F#]
[G#m] Alright, now that's usually followed by an open E.
And it is this time too, but it begins our first part of the real lick.
But just to give you a couple of songs where you'll hear it.
You'll hear it in Folsom [B] Prison Blues.
[E] And you'll [G#m] also hear it in Brad Paisley's [B] Alcohol.
[E]
Let me play the whole thing slowly.
Here it is.
[G] [C#]
[Em] [C]
[Bm] [D#m] [F#m]
[B] [E]
[Em] Alright, let's start out with the lick on the E.
Let me play it slowly first so you can hear it.
[G#]
[C#] [B] [N]
Now, a couple of pointers before we begin.
On all of this, you want to play as close to that bridge as you can.
So move where you normally pick back a little bit toward the bridge.
Not too far so that you're uncomfortable doing it, but just a little bit.
It gives you that little extra twang.
Second thing is, this is all down-up picking or otherwise called alternate picking.
And every time you play a new string, you want to play with a downstroke.
Okay, so just keep that in mind.
So every time I go to a new string, I'm playing [E] downstroke. Downstroke.
[B] Downstroke.
[Bm]
[C#] [B] Downstroke.
[G#] [F] Okay, and on the next lick, I'm going to be ready for that lick [N] with a downstroke.
Okay, so I'm going to end the lick on an upstroke.
Every lick I'm going to end, I'm going to end on an upstroke.
Okay, so here we go with the lick proper.
We're going to start out with a downstroke and we're going to play two open E's.
[E] Open sixth string.
[G] Then three, four.
[N] Fifth string now.
We're going to play two on the second fret.
Remember downstroke.
First time we [B] hit that string.
[G] Okay, now we're going to play [C#] the following.
[Bm]
[B] [A#] Okay, now what I can tell you about that lick is that play it very, very slowly because it's pinky intensive.
And you've got to play your pinky [C#] on and off very quickly.
[B]
[Bm] [E] That's tough to do if you're not used to doing it.
So play it very, very slowly.
And then speed it up.
[D] [C#] [D#] And then three, four on the sixth string.
[C#] Downstroke.
Then we move on [A] to the A lick.
[G] Now the A lick is exactly the same as the E lick.
We're just going to play in the five and fourth strings instead of the sixth and fifth.
[A] So here it is slowly.
[E]
[Em] [F#] [C] [C#]
[G] Okay, so two open E, two [A] open fifth strings.
[C] Then three, four on the fifth.
[G] And then we've got the two on the fourth.
Remember downstroke.
[Em] First time you hit that string.
Okay, and then we're going to play this.
[F#] [E] And then [D#] three, four again on the fifth.
Alright, so remember play that one slowly because it's pinky intensive.
Alright, here's the one we're going to play [B] over the B.
[D#] Now, [Gm] let me play it slowly [Bm] first.
[F#] [F#m] [G#]
[D] [D#] [D] Alright, now that one happens to be exactly the [F#] same as this.
We're just going to move it up two frets.
So we're playing on the fifth and fourth strings.
We're going to start with the fifth string, two strokes on the second.
Remember downstroke.
[B] [A#] Then we're going to play five, six.
[D#]
And then we're going to [G] play fourth on the fourth string.
[F#] [D] Remember downstroke.
First time we hit [G#] that.
Then we're going to play this little lick.
[F#m] [G#] [F#]
[D#] That's that pinky intensive lick.
[F#m]
Alright, [G] and then we're going to play [D] five, six on the fifth [D#] string.
[E] Alright, over the last two bars of E, we're going to play the following.
I'm going to play it slowly.
[B] [G]
Okay, so that's simply two.
We're playing this all on the fourth and fifth strings.
Two strokes on the second fret. Fourth string.
[E]
And then we're going to play [C#] four and two [Em] on the fifth.
So, like so.
[B] [N] We're going to do that twice.
Third time we're going to [C#] play
[F] So, the third time we're just going to play the [F#] second on the fourth string one time.
And then play on the fifth string four and two.
I pull off on [E] that one.
[G] And then play the second to end it.
Well, I hope you enjoyed that [N] one.
It's really one of my favorites.
It's simple in structure, but super fun to play
Hot Rod Lincoln.

We're going to start with the fifth string, two strokes on the second.
Remember downstroke.
[B] _ _ [A#] Then we're going to play five, six.
[D#] _
And then we're going to [G] play fourth on the fourth string.
[F#] _ _ [D] Remember downstroke.
First time we hit [G#] that.
Then we're going to play this little lick.
[F#m] _ _ [G#] _ _ [F#] _
[D#] That's that pinky intensive lick.
_ _ _ [F#m] _
_ Alright, [G] and then we're going to play [D] five, six on the fifth [D#] string.
_ [E] Alright, over the last two bars of E, we're going to play the following.
I'm going to play it slowly.
[B] _ _ _ _ _ [G] _
Okay, so that's simply two.
We're playing this all on the fourth and fifth strings.
Two strokes on the second fret. Fourth string.
[E] _ _
And then we're going to play [C#] four and two [Em] on the fifth.
So, like so.
[B] _ _ [N] We're going to do that twice.
Third time we're going to [C#] play_
_ [F] _ So, the third time we're just going to play the [F#] second on the fourth string one time.
And then play on the fifth string four and two.
I pull off on [E] that one. _ _
[G] _ And then play the second to end it.
Well, I hope you enjoyed that [N] one.
It's really one of my favorites.
It's simple in structure, but super fun to play
