Well, Jamie and I wrote some songs together during the lockdown.
And I guess a couple of them landed on this new record I just made,
and landed on a record you just made too.
This one we wrote after we went to an outdoor service for a friend of mine who passed away unexpectedly.
The last couple of years have been a season of loss in my life.
An awful lot of people that I was very, very close to passed on.
And it's not all from COVID, but some is, some are.
It's just been a real transition time, and I'm still trying to make sense of what happened to me as a result of all this.
I'm different in some ways.
I can't name it, though.
I feel it.
I'm older, of course, but it's not just that.
So that's kind of what songwriting is for, is to help make sense of some of these things that are really hard to pin down.
This one we wrote together, I guess it was one late November.
It was cold outside.
We had the fire going, and we were sitting there just reminiscing about my friend Betsy.
I hiked for 20-something years with my friend Betsy on these hills right outside of Nashville.
And she was an extremely fit and healthy person.
She was a tiny little thing, and she hiked almost every day these five-mile trails.
And around Nashville, the trails are like this.
There's hills and climbs, and it's not exactly my favorite thing to do.
But I'd get off the road, and she'd be like, let's go.
We're going.
I'm like, okay, let's do the white trail.
No, we're going to the red.
The white trail is a mile and a half.
The red trail is four and a half.
And she dragged me up that hill and pushed me down for 20-odd years.
And we lost her during the pandemic just utterly unexpectedly.
And Jamie and I were able to go to the hospital and sit with her for a little while in the ICU.
And then we went to her service, and I guess I reckon about a month later, we put this together.
We'll send this one out to anybody who's lost someone that is still in shock about it.
That's certainly my experience.
Even though it was two years ago now, I'm still in shock about it.
I'm going to have Jamie sing it, because it really is appropriate for her voice.
And I just would love to have her sing it.
I'm going to try to strum along and not screw it up here.
It's called How Could You Be Gone.
