[G] G'day folks, it's Phil from 15-Minute Guitar Practice and today [N] we're going to learn the
correct way to play the intro to Eye of the Tiger.
If you type in how to play Eye of the Tiger on guitar into this here YouTube search box,
you are offered _ hundreds of options to learn the Eye of the Tiger.
So I checked out the
top 5 to see how accurate they were.
The first entry was a good lesson but didn't deal with the timing at all.
The second entry
had the wrong chords, had the wrong key and didn't mention the timing at all.
The third entry [G] is actually the music video to the song Eye of the Tiger.
The fourth one had the right chords but didn't deal with the timing.
The fifth one dealt with the timing but had the wrong chords.
And I kind of started to lose faith a little bit here so I skipped ahead a couple. _ _
Entry number 7, it mentions the timing but says, and I quote,
The timing should come from just knowing the song really well and having a little play along to it.
So I'd like to clear up the timing of this right here, right now.
So to understand the weird timing that happens in the intro, you first have to understand rhythmic subdivisions.
It's not that complicated but this [A] intro is a typical example of [G] how you can't really _ feel what's happening there.
You can't kind of feel and guess it and listen and copy.
If you can't feel it, [E] you have to count it.
Gotta count it bro!
So let's talk about subdivisions.
A bar is a count of 4 and in that bar of 4 [Eb] we have 1, 2, [G] 3, 4.
Those are quarter notes because we have 4 of them in one bar.
If we then split those in half we get 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
And because we've got 8 of them, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
They are eighth notes.
If we need sixteenth notes, which [Ab] is exactly what the muted guitar is playing [G] in the intro to Eye of the Tiger,
we count sixteenth notes like this.
1 and [A] 2 and 3 and 4 and.
[Eb] So the first set of power chord stabs would be as follows.
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Db] I'm pretty sure you would have picked that one up because you can [Eb] feel that one and you can kind [E] of get it by listening.
But what's happening in the second phrase that throws everybody?
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
_ [Gb] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ _ _ So what's happened there?
Well the second phrase has been displaced by two sixteenth notes.
It's late by that amount of time.
So it now falls on the and of 3 and the [C] e of 4.
The way to count it would be.
1 and 2 and 3 _ _ _ _ and 4 and.
And the 3 _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ and [D] 4 and.
_ One more time.
[C] 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Abm] _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] That's what's happening.
It's displaced by a couple of sixteenth notes.
And that's why it catches you unaware.
It sounds like it comes in late and then sounds like the next bit comes in [C] too soon.
One other bit [D] I consistently see played [Eb] incorrectly is the verse.
[E] Most people think the verse is just simply straight sixteenth notes that [C] goes you know. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Like that.
But [Em] actually there is some genius syncopation [D] in this verse.
And it's actually like this.
1 2 3 [C] 4 1. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ So _ [N] there's some dropouts there.
They're using the absence of the sixteenth notes to create a great groove.
And in verse 1 it's like this.
1 2 3 4 1.
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] Repeat that.
And then in verse 2 it ups the ante by shortening and only doing [G] two down ups before _ doing more.
So verse [G] 2 is down up down up down [A] up down up down up.
_ _ [A] _
_ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _ [D]
So [Db] you can see how it kind of progresses and keeps things bouncing along just by the use of omission and addition.
[F] So great groove there and those are the bits that I really wanted to tell you about.
If you like this video then give me a thumbs up.
If you [D] didn't give me a thumbs down.
And I'm happy to hear your _ _ comments below.
_ _ And subscribe if you want to see more from me.
Bye [N] for now.
