a little trick that you can use on your fiddle tunes that will make them sound ten times
harder than what they really are.
This trick is called open string drones.
It just so happens that most fiddle tunes are in the key of A major, D major, or G major.
And those three keys love our open strings.
So that about seven out of ten times if you try an open string with what you're playing,
it's going to work and it'll sound good.
I usually start by trying my lower open string because that provides a nice bass drone.
But if that doesn't sound good, I try my upper string and usually if the lower string doesn't
work the upper string will.
I'm going to demonstrate this for [G] you with the tune Golden Slippers.
And Golden Slippers is the [Ab] first tune in the fiddle collection that is available for download
through [G] the Virtual Sheet Music library.
And it is a fantastic little fiddle collection.
It has 24 tunes, it has piano accompaniment, it's got the guitar chords, it's a great way
to get [Eb] started fiddling.
Okay so here's Golden Slippers with no drones added.

[G] Okay I added a slide in there I couldn't resist.
Now let me show you what it sounds like if I add some open string drones.

It makes a huge difference.
[G] Like I said, just try one.
Try your lower string, if that doesn't work, try your upper string.
If that doesn't work, then lay off and play a single string for a while and in five more
notes chances are that one of your open strings will work.
Let me show you one more tune out of the fiddle collection.
It's a very famous bluegrass tune called Red Haired Boy.
It's also played in the Celtic tradition.
I'm going to show it to you just to demonstrate [N] that sometimes you can just glue your bow
onto two strings and keep it there.
Play your fiddle tune and it works throughout the whole bit.
So here's Red Haired Boy, this is the A part, and I'm going to keep my bow on two strings
the whole time.

[Am] [N] you hear that?
Sometimes I was on the A and the E, sometimes I was on the A and the D.
And [G] it works magically and makes it sound like this incredibly hard fiddle hoedown.
And it's easy.
