What is [N] up guys?
So I've been putting some 30 second drum lessons on here and after that I've been asking a
question and in one of them I asked what are some requests that you guys have for lessons
and what not and a request that came back was I want some Steve Gadd grooves.
Well you know he's got some epic grooves and some really popular recordings but something
that he mastered that a lot of us don't know about, well we know about it but we don't
know that he used it because we can't see video of him recording it, is this open handed
technique that he would use to get all of these crazy grooves like what he did for 50
Ways to Leave Your Lover.
There's another tune with Chick Corea that he did called Lenore and I think I'm pronouncing
that right, I may be murdering it, you Spanish speaking people y'all let me know.
But what he did [F] in that was essentially what he did in 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover and
that was he took this open handed approach and kind of created [G] this lopsided feel.
So I just feel not fill, so I just wanted to go over that with you guys and kind of
break it down and explain it.
It clips out at about 133-135 BPM is where you're going to work it [N] up to but for right
now what we'll do is it's a four beat groove and the first two beats all it is is a sticking,
there's no kick involved at all but it involves the right hand over here and the left hand
here, the right hand goes between the floor tom and the snare drum.
Now what is that sticking?
The sticking is straight 16th notes and it's going to be right, left, left, right, left,
right, right, left.
So right, left, left, then we have a paradiddle, paradiddle and then a left and it'll sound like this.
Okay, so that sticking is not too hard.
So the first thing we want to do is get that sticking down.
So we're going to play that sticking over and over and I'm going to put my left hand
over here on the hi-hat so that we can hear the difference in the sticking and we're going
to play that right at 80 BPM so 1 ena, 2 ena, 3 ena.
[Ab]
[A]
[Db] Now that's the first two beats, that's the sticking for that.
We'll get on to the rest in just a second.
Now what he does in the third and fourth beat, what he does is he brings in [Ab] the kick.
The kick comes in on 3 and then you have the upbeat on the hi-hat with the left hand so
3 and and then another kick so 3 e and a, 3 e and a.
What he does on the fourth beat is basically right, left, foot, foot but it's here on the snare.
Accent, left on the hi-hat, foot, foot.
So all that sounds like this.
[Bb]
So that's not too bad.
It's really two simple ideas put together.
Now how would we put this together in a context of learning it?
What I would like to do first, if it was me learning it and when I learned it, I took
the sticking and put it on the snare and put the second part since that wasn't so hard.
I learned the second part of the [Em] groove and then I put the sticking here on the snare,
played no accents, just two beats of that sticking and then this drum part right there
or the second part of the beat.
So we'll start that at 70 [Bb] BPM.
[Abm] [G]
[A]
[F]
Once you get that part down, then what you want to do is start moving these [N] accents and
whatnot to the different drums.
So you accent the first right hand and you accent the second right hand.
The doubles don't get accented.
[F] So that would sound like this in the sticking.
The left hand never gets accented.
The difference is where they get accented.
The first accent comes on the floor tom and the second [A] accent comes on the snare just
like I just played it.
[Abm]
Now the left hand, there's the tricky part, left hand goes to the hi-hat and we do the
same thing over here.
Here's how that'll sound.
[B]
[Dm]
So we've got all the basic [A] components of that groove right there.
Now we just need to put them together.
So I'm going to start it at 70 BPM and start to put that groove together.
[F]
[Eb] [F]
[Ab] We have a really complex groove [N] by Steve Gadd and really it's not as complex as it sounds
when it's just broken down and you realize he's playing in an open handed fashion.
So I hope you enjoyed that.
That's just a Steve Gadd groove breakdown.
