[G] _ _ _ _ Hello
This is just gonna be a basic
demonstration of _ [N] a
simple drop thumb style roll
_ _ This is about all I know really
I wish I had started practicing this a lot earlier when I started playing all that didn't really intentionally
_ _ _ Think I was going to play the banjo for any length of time
I just picked it up to try to learn a few [B] songs for my mother's 90th [G] birthday, but
_ _ _ Anyway
[Eb] So now I'm playing _ and
[N] I'm trying to work in the drop thumb into my playing
_ with the drop thumb seems to do is it seems to
Finesse out certain passages, you know, it allows you to play quicker and in time and with a little
_ _ _ _ _ _ phrasing [G] so _ _ so
One thing I [Ab] am going to do is I'm going to be holding
[G] _ _ [D] _ _
I'm gonna be fretting a note up here.
So it's gonna [A] sound different if you try to do it
_ [G] With open strings, I'm gonna have my second finger [Bb] down [G] on the second fret third string, okay
_ _ _ _ _ [D] And _ [N] _ _ I'm gonna try to roll
So I'm gonna do index on the first [D] string
_ Then I'm gonna drop down and use my [Eb] thumb on the second [B] string
Then I'm gonna come up and use my index on [G] the third string which I have fretted at the [Gbm] second fret
_ Then I'm gonna hit the third [N] string again with my index finger and I'm gonna take my second finger off the second fret
So I'm gonna [G] hit it open
_ _ Then I'm gonna strum _ _
_ _ _ _ Slow _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ motion _
index second [D] third
With the second fret depressed third [G] string open and then strum thumb _
_ _ _ [D] _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ For those that use the middle [Gm] finger for their main striking finger, I think that actually
_ Using the middle finger sets you up a little bit better [G] to do a drop thumb because your thumb is more over the strings
[Ab] I'm [D] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
using my third middle finger there, but _ [Bb] I
Have started using [Ab] my index and that's what I [G] use.
So
_ So go through it slowly again
_ drop [N] thumb roll _ [D] index
_ [Bm] Drop your thumb down a second string _
[B] Then I'm using [A] third string second fret third string [G] open with index strum _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ That's _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ it and there's [Gm] a link to the tab on the website, thanks for watching happy playing
