Hey everybody, Corey at Gemini Guitar.
Today's is a short and sweet lesson.
So we're going to be looking at some embellishments to use in a sort of a punk stoner type of
progression I guess.
Starting in the 7th position on a B5.
We're just going to stick on the
same set of strings, so we'll be on strings 6 and 5.
And anyways, I'll show you the idea
first and then we'll break up what's happening.
Here we go.
[E] [B]
[G] [A] [B]
[G] [A] [G]
[A] [B]
[N] Now the chords involved start at the 7th fret, so we've got B5 on, first finger's [B] on
string 6, [G] 3rd's on string 5 at the 9th.
Now you just keep that shape, move that down to
the 3rd position for the G5, and up to the 5th position [A] for the A5.
[G] Now what this is focusing on is just embellishing the power chord, so this is a blues based
sort of thing to do, and you normally tend to hear it in like shuffle type blues music
and things like that, rock and roll and styles like that.
But it can work nicely in the punk
style too, and the stoner sort of style as you saw in the intro.
Now what I was doing was starting with the power chord and then using the 4th finger
then to go on to the 11th fret on the 5th string.
This turns it into B6, so instead
of using the 5th with the B note, this time we're using the 6th.
I'm just going to slow
it down so you can see what happens, and that's pretty much the easiest way to absorb it.
[B] [Bm]
[C#] So I'll do that [B] again.
[Bm] [N] And what you can do with these is just experiment with different ways to use them rhythmically.
I'll just stick to that type of idea for the duration of this lesson, but then you can
come up with your own ideas after that.
So let's do that again and then I'll do the changes
and I'll show you how that works.
Here we go.
[B]
[G] [A]
[B] [Bm]
[G] [A] [D] [B]
[G] So you'll notice on the G and the A5, not as much time spent there.
Let's have a listen to that.
[A] [B]
[E] [G]
[A] The [B] [Gm]
other thing you'll note there is that as I'm coming off from the G5 and then into
the A5 and then A5 into B5, you may notice there there's the E strings ringing out, the
[E] lower E.
[G] And that's a nice transitional thing to do, so it helps me to slide over.
So I'll
show you that a bit slower.
[E] [A]
[D] [E] [B] [G#] And you can actually hear it [G] there.
[A] [D] [A]
[B] [E] [B] That's also cool to do because
it just adds an element of melody to it as well, which is very nice when you've got a
simple progression riff thing to work with.
So let's listen to the whole thing slowed down.
[Bm]
[G] [A] [Am]
[B] [Bm]
[G] [A]
[B] [Bm]
[G] [A]
[E] [B] [E]
[B] [G] [Gm] [A] [Am]
[B] [G]
