[C] [A#] Hi, [G] Travis here from Whomper Pedals and the Chasing Tone Podcast.
I wanted to take a bit to talk to you about my favorite effect and how I think is the best way to use it,
and that's fuzz.
I think a lot of people
think that they can put fuzz into a really quiet clean amp and expect these great tones
they've heard recorded and you know, like all the old Hendrix stuff, especially the live bootleg stuff, this monstrous tone.
A lot of that was because he was going into an amp that's already cranked.
So I kind of wanted to break that down and let you hear the exact same setup, the exact same settings on the pedal.
The only difference being is we're gonna crank the amp and then, well, we're gonna play it soft and then crank the amp.
So we're going through a 1968 small box Plexi, kind of like what Hendrix would have used.
[E] So right now we just have a clean tone.
So here's our clean tone.
[F#m] [E]
[C] [Gm] [Am]
[A] So now I'm gonna play the exact same settings through the fuzz face and I got the fuzz face,
it's a germanium one, I got it set up
almost totally maxed out on gain.
So here's what that sounds like through a clean amp.
[E] [Em] [A]
[E] [A] [E]
So you can see it still sounds fuzzy, it still has that, you know,
falling in on itself quality that a fuzz gives you,
but it's not gonna sound as big and [B] monstrous as it is if you were going through an already cranked amp.
So
give me just a second.
I'll be right back.
I'm gonna change some settings on the amp.
Okay, so all I've done is I changed the settings on the, I didn't even change the settings,
I just cranked, it's a Plexi so that has a volume 1 and volume 2,
I just cranked the volume 2 up to about 8, or yeah volume 1, I'm sorry, up to about 8,
so the treble channel, and it was on about 3.
So here it is,
just,
just straight into the amp, no fuzz pedal.
[E]
[Em]
So now, exact same settings on the fuzz,
I'm just gonna hit it and play around and you'll hear that it gets that bigger tone.
So
[E] [Em]
[D] [E]
[B] [A] [Bm]
[A] [E] [N]
that's the way I like to use a fuzz, I like to use it into a cranked amp, okay?
Now the cool thing is, is there's a pedal out there that
kind of captures the whole signal chain, and that's the Wampler Velvet Fuzz.
And that's kind of what Brian and I were going for whenever I said, hey,
I'd really like a fuzz that sounds like this.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take the amp, put it back down on the clean channel,
and hit that Velvet Fuzz, and then you'll hear the difference,
or I'm sorry, the similarities of how it captures that whole signal chain, kind of a fuzz going into a cranked amp.
Okay, so what I've done is I've turned the volume back down on the amp,
and I plugged in the Velvet Fuzz, and you're gonna notice,
I think, that it captures that signal chain of a fuzz going into a cranked amp.
So here's the clean tone, [E]
[F#m] [E] [G] and now the fuzz, the Velvet Fuzz.
[E] [A] [Em]
[E]
[Dm] [E]
[C#] [G] [F#] [E] [N]
So you can hear it really captures that whole signal chain of a cranked fuzz going into a cranked amp.
So hopefully that helped you kind of understand
why a fuzz doesn't sound as good going into a
lower volume or cleaner amp as it does going into a higher volume,
or why you're not getting those monstrous tones that you're used to hearing.
And maybe, you know, something like the Velvet Fuzz could work for you in that situation.
So if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.
Thanks for watching.
