We're going to learn some pinch harmonics right now, and I hope it helps you and I hope you have fun.
So let's get learning.
Pinch harmonics.
We're going to take the C minor pentatonic scale.
So the root is there on the 8th fret [C] of the E.
[B] [Cm] Now it's going to help to have some gain, so I'm using a King of Tone overdrive pedal to get some [C] overdrive.
I'm using a blend of both pickups.
[E] And then the other thing is depending on where you pick over the pickups, give you different pinch harmonics.
So watch, I'm just going to play through the scale as I would normally pick [Eb] it.
[Cm] [Eb] [Fm]
[E] Now I'm going to use my technique that I'm going to show you to get the pinch harmonic [Eb] sounds.
[Fm]
[G]
[Eb] [Fm]
[F] [C] [Eb]
[Db] [Eb]
[Db] So the idea is you're still striking the note with the pick, but at the same time you're getting the meat from your thumb and your index finger, thus the term pinch.
Like you're pinching, right?
You're really still striking it with the pick, but you choke up on the pick, so you bring it in.
So if you look here, my normal pick hand, it might be out like this far.
But when you're going for the pinch harmonics, you just choke in until there's just a little bit of the tip.
So what you're getting now is you're getting the pick with the skin of the finger at the same time.
So I'm choked up.
The other thing I do is if I'm holding the pick and I choke up, I bring my thumb out a little bit farther, and it's almost like I'm looking like I'm picking [F] with my thumb.
[C] [E] [F] [C]
[Ab] So that was just my thumb, right?
[C]
But now you hold the [F] pick and still think of it like you're hitting it with your thumb.
[Fm] [F] My thumb's pretty [Fm] far out.
[Eb]
[Gbm] Really get that thumb into it, but still hit it with the [G] pick, and that is the trick.
[Eb] [Abm] And the other thing is when you're playing along with a jam track, you don't want every single note to be a pinch harmonic, right?
So it's okay if you're not getting it every time.
You can just get it in there for another kind of emotional effect or a dynamic [Fm] effect.
