Hey what's up guys it's [Eb] Blake and today I'm going to be going over how to get [Bb] a good pop punk [Ab] guitar [Eb] tone.
Today I'm going to be [Db] focusing on the crunchier [Ab] and more distorted side [Eb] of pop punk guitar tones and how to really get that going from
your guitar [G] to your pedalboard to your amp [Ab] and how they all come together to make one [Eb]
full cohesive [G] product.
Elements of each [Ab] of those three things are equally as important [Bb] as the others.
They all play an integral [Ab] part in getting what you want out of your [Eb] tone.
In my videos I've gone [Db] from having
I like to think pretty good tone and other times pretty terrible ones when I was first starting out.
[Eb] I fixed all those [F] issues using these [Eb] steps that I've learned over the years.
I think pop punk guitar tones are [Bb] some of the easiest to get and not complex [Bbm] at all and can be [Eb] really gotten out of [Ab] many lower grade
instruments and amps as long as you're doing it right.
So we're [Eb] going to break this up into three sections each focusing on [Ab] guitar, pedals, and the amp and how they all [Cm] work together.

First I [Gb] want to [C] talk about the guitar that you are using in the specs of whatever [A] you have
and [D] how that [Fm] is probably [C] one of the more important things.
The first thing I want to talk [F] about when it comes to the guitar you're [B] using is [C] the pickups that are in it.
You [Am] need to either have a P90 [Cm] or a humbucker in your bridge slot to have an effective and fat tone.
Single coils are [C] great for cleans because it really brings out the brightness [D] and chime and everything
but for a really heavy [G] saturated rhythm tone that uses a lot [C] of gain and distortion and all of that good stuff that you need,
you need a humbucker to [D] really get the best out of your sound.
I made this [G] mistake early on and had my strap that I use in my videos but instead [C] of having the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails
I just had a straight single coil and used that.
It was too thin and [D] jangly and loose.
[C] Once I actually put a humbucker in that guitar it really brought it together and really [Em] compressed that distortion
into a very [Am] usable and very [Gm] effective [Bb] rhythm tone.

Next [Bb] I want to talk about amps and pedals and how they work together.
First when it comes to amps I want to talk about EQ.
When you're EQing your guitar you're [Gm] probably going to be alone in a setting where [Bb] there's no other instruments or anything [Eb] going on.
And that is definitely dangerous [Bb] because you're going to be tempted to crank the bass up,
[Gm] scoop the mids because it sounds awesome when you're [G] on your own.
[Bb] But when you're in a full band setting you're going to get lost in the mix so fast.
If [Gm] you're bumping the lower [F] frequencies that are often taken [Bb] up by the bass and drums you're just going [Gm] to blend right into that.
[F] Your goal is to be heard [Bb] and stand out as the [Gm] really lead instrument in the band.
The way you're going to do this is [Eb] in the mid section.
What I like to do is scoop [Gm] the bass to about 4 [Bb]
and bump the mids to about 7 and take the treble [Bb] right at [G] 5, right [Bb] at nude.
And remember to keep the gain as low as possible because the gain is [Eb] not a volume knob.
You want to [Bb] have these cascading gain stages that you can use for [Gm] the amp, the boost and the [F] overdrive.
And you want to be able to take these out and put them in to have a really [Eb] versatility of tones within your greater tone.
So here's what [Bb] I do and how I [Eb] personally craft my [F] tone.
I start with [Gm] a crunchy amp [C] like this.
[A] [C]
[Gm] Very [F] light, very [Gm] not heavy, very bass.
[Bb] And then I like to add in my [Eb] overdrive.
I personally use [A] a Friedman Brown [Gm] Eye [F] Overdrive.
But here's what it sounds like [Gb] with the [C] Friedman.

[Bb] It's definitely much more [Gm] saturated, much more in [Dm] your face and much [Eb] heavier.
And the next step is adding in my boost which I'm using a [Gm] TS-808 which just kind of goes in [Eb] and tightens up that distortion.
And it sounds like [C] this.
And

[C] [Bb]
with each of those three steps, [Gm] you can see how each one builds off the next and [Fm] brings it all together at the end.
[Bb]
One very big and very, I don't want to say heavy, but [F] saturated tone fits [Gm] in very well on a [F] pop punk scenario.
I like to [G] push the mids a lot [Gm] because it sticks out [Bb] very well in many mixes both live and while recording.
It really [Bbm] allows my guitar to sit [Ebm] right over the mix when I'm [N] doing covers and sit over [Eb] the bass and drums when I'm playing with other musicians.
[G] Being a guitarist is all about knowing your place in the mix.
[Bb] And if you're pushing those bass frequencies and leaving out those mid to highs, you're not going [Gm] to get a great result [F] and you're not going to be heard [Bb] while you're playing.
All in all, it's a very [Gm] easy tone to get.
[F] There's not a lot going [Eb] into it and it makes it very easy to [Gm] figure it out.
To [F] just recap before we end [Eb] this, guitar with humbuckers.
Amp [Gm] on a crunchy [Bb] channel and then add in an overdrive.
Very [Eb] simple formula, very easy to [Ebm] get.
