Hi there, I'm just going to demonstrate a technique I've just stumbled across for
getting a sweeter sound out of an overblow.
The overblown question in this
sample is the overblow on six and it occurs a couple of times in this small
sample I'll play of Autumn Leaves.
I'll play that first and then I'll describe
the technique afterwards.
[Abm] [Bb] [B]
[Bb] [Gm] [Gb]
[Cm] [D] [C]
[D] [Bm] [Am] [C]
[Bm]
So the technique involves tapping the harp really or bouncing it off the lips.
The six [Eb] overblow played on its own and especially on a prolonged note can
sound a bit harsh.
I'll play the overblown six.
[B] It's doable but sounds a bit
dull.
So the [Bb] technique I'm using here is a little bit like the
old corny campfire sound, [Em] do you know any?
[N]
But to get that tremolo effect I'm using, well
really bouncing the harp off my lips and trying to keep the seal.
That was a bit
difficult at first but that's what it sounds [F] like.
Sounds much nicer to my ears
anyway.
Here again.
The more even you can get the oscillation the better the
sound will be.
[Bb] So I hope you found this video useful and it
getting a sweeter sound out of an overblow.
