[Bb] Hello Monkey C fans and [Gm] Razorlight fans.
[Bb] I've had some inquiries after we posted up our band video of [Eb]
America by Razorlight of how to actually play the intro guitar riff on the song.
So I thought I would post this up for anyone that's interested.
The key to playing this intro is number one, you want a capo on the 7th fret of the guitar so that when you play the D string, [Gm] you get that nice ringing note that rings through the intro of the tune.
[G] That's the one that is ringing throughout.
[D]
[Eb] Now what Johnny Burrell seems to be doing is playing a C position based on the 7th fret, [Ab]
[Bb] which is actually an A chord.
I won't get too technical on this, but basically you're playing the C position and the first two positions of the tune [E] you're sliding up from the C position up two frets.
So it would start off [G] like this.
[D] [Bb]
And again, a lot of this tune is actually in the picking, in the right hand, to make sure you pick the right [G] notes.
[D]
Your ups and downs in this hand are very [Bb] important on this one as well, to make sure that you're picking the right notes in the right order and that [G] you make [D] sure you're [Eb] letting the left hand keep the strings clean so that you're getting the ringing notes underneath which is what fills out the sound and makes it such a nice riff.
[Bb] I'll play the riff [Eb] through for you now so you can hear it in its entirety.
[G] [B]
[G] [D] [G]
[D] [G]
[D] [Bm]
[G] [D]
[G] So [Gm]
that's it, more or less.
[Eb] A little bit of a fluff at the end there, but we'll show you how to play that [N] anyway properly.
So firstly starting off playing the C [G] chord.
[Eb] Sliding up two frets.
[A] [D]
[Bb] Then you go into what is effectively like a part of a G chord.
So you want your middle finger, [N] this is how I play it anyway, middle finger on the second fret.
And then you want to be doing some pull-offs with your third finger on the D string [Gm] on the ninth fret.
So it should [Gb] be.
[D]
And then you're going back to the [G] C.
So that's [D] [G]
[Gm] the first part of the riff.
[N] The second part of the riff starts again but you're actually playing an extra note compared to the first part of the [G] riff.
Which is that one.
[D]
That [Bb] last part is, again, you've got your middle finger on the ninth fret [Gb] there of the second string.
[D] So you're reaching up [Gb] to the eleventh fret.
[D] [G]
[D] [G]
[D] [G] It always helps [Eb] if you can use your little finger because it makes these sort of stretches that much easier.
Third round, similar [G] again.
You're putting your pinky [Bb] on the tenth [G] fret for this one.
And pulling off.
[N] Now the next part that I play I think is slightly different to how it is on the record.
But I thought I heard this played on later when Johnny Burrell played it live.
[Gm] Maybe it was just my imagination but I think it sounds nice anyway.
But [D] I play
Which [Eb] is
If you have a look I've got my index finger on the
[N] ninth fret.
Middle finger on the tenth fret.
And I'm skipping a string.
I've got my third finger on the eleventh fret.
And my little finger on the twelfth fret.
[A]
So I'm only [D] playing the second, [Ebm] third, sixth and fifth [A] strings there.
[Gbm] Then I'm taking back my [Eb] middle finger on the ninth fret.
[Gb] [Bm] [G]
And I'm playing a little run down.
So [B] open to the seventh.
Little [Bb] finger on the [A] tenth.
[F] And then a little hammer on from the seventh to the [G] eighth on the B string.
[Gb] [Bm]
[Gb] [D] And [G] then [Eb] trying to roll that back [C] into the C position.
[D] Just [G]
filling it out a little bit with a couple of little [Eb] flourishes at the end there.
[N] And then play [G] the riff again.
[D] And then the last [Bm] part
[N] We're playing the ninth, tenth and then open to the [Eb] seventh again on the [Gb] top E string.
[D] [Gbm] [Bm] [Gbm] [Bm]
[N] That's about the size of it.
I think when I go into the verses Johnny plays a much more stripped down version of that.
Because obviously to play that and sing would be quite difficult.
So I [G] think he just tends to play along with it.
[D]
[G] [D]
[G] When he plays the second verse he puts in that little extra [Ab] flourish there.
Just to fill it out a little [N] bit and build the song slightly.
Hopefully that's given you an idea of how to play this tune.
Take it away.
I mean obviously everyone plays it slightly differently.
I had a lot of fun learning it.
I hope you had a lot of fun learning it rather than listening to me.
