[G] [Am] [Bbm] [B] Hi, I'm Scott with ScottGuitar.com.
In this session [F] I'm going to teach you how to play Angie by the Rolling Stones.
So let's zoom on in and get started.
[Am] [Db] Okay, Angie by the Rolling Stones.
The first thing that we're going to do in this song is we're going to play a harmonic
at the [B] 12th fret on the A string.
If you're not familiar with [C] a harmonic, first of all you're going to play not between the
frets, but right on top of the fret.
Unless you're Eddie Van Halen, [A] you can get harmonics at the 5th fret, the 7th fret, and
the 12th fret.
A [Gb] harmonic is simply the tone that you hear at the top of a [Cm] note.
Here's what [G] harmonics sound like.
Sound like little bells.
These are the notes, and these are harmonics.
Okay?
You [N] need to get accustomed to the touch and feel of this technique.
What you do is I would use your third finger, not the middle.
It's a little bit too strong and heavy.
Just barely touch it.
When I say barely, I mean just make sure you can just barely feel the string.
You [D] pick it and get your finger out of the way because it needs to [Gm] vibrate.
[N] So just practice on that and go for that bell tone.
That's the D string [D] over the fret, the actual bar.
[G]
So work [B] with that.
And now the first note [N] we're going to play in Angie is a harmonic on the [A] A string.
Okay?
The next thing [C] we're going to do is [B] go to an A [Am] minor, strum the chord.
[A] Now we're going to strum the bottom three [Am] strings.
Put our little finger on E3, [C] [Am] strum, pick up.
Little finger [D] on B3, strum, [Am] pick up.
So here's [A] what we got.
[Am]
And work on that cadence as well.
[A] [Am]
[N] The next position is keep your hand in the A minor shape.
Lift your middle finger off, slide up two frets.
We're going to pick [E] the top string.
[Em]
Okay?
Then we're going to [Db] pick [F] G, B, E, [Bm] B, G.
[E] [Em]
The next thing we do is put our middle [G] finger on E4, and we [Ab] pick that.
[Abm] Then we [B] pick the same three [Bm] strings.
[E] So we got.
[Ab] [E] Notice [G] after we set our middle finger down, we play the [Db] bottom three strings
and we don't [Ab] come back up.
[E] Okay?
So that is.
[Ab] [E]
[N] The next position we're going to play is a G suspended.
Just in case you don't know, an F shape is a movable shape.
When you move an F up two frets, that becomes a G.
Up two frets an A, up two frets, A, B, and then a C and then a D.
I'll cover movable chord [A] shapes in another session.
But for now, take that F shape up to the third fret.
[N] Put your little finger under the third finger on the G string.
And here's what we're going to pick.
[G] [C] [G] [Cm]
[G] [C] [G]
[Cm] So we pick [G] down from the D string, back up, B string, [C] back up to the G string.
[G] [Cm]
[G] Okay?
Now hold that G suspended.
[Eb] Take it down to an F suspended.
[Bb] Strum, lift the [F] little finger, and strum [C] again.
So we [G] got.
[Bb]
[F] Now what I want you to do is take your first finger off of the E [Eb] string
and only put it on the B string.
[Gbm] We're going to do a little run down.
We're going to start with the [F] D string.
We're picking the D, G, B.
[A] Take this finger off.
[G] Take your middle finger up one.
[C] [F] So we got.
[C]
Now take this finger off, [D] middle finger, [G]
and pick only the D and G [F] string.
[C]
In this position, we pick the same [A] three strings as we did the [F] first.
D, G, B.
[Em] D, [C] G, B.
Pick [G] it up.
D, G.
[C] C chord.
[F]
[C] Now you can do a little run too from the C to the A minor.
That's A3, [B] A2, and then [C] A open, [Am] strum A minor.
And J.
That's where they start singing.
[E] And then E7.
[Eb] Okay.
So here's what we got so far.
I'm going to take it from the beginning and go [Am] slow.
[A]
[Am]
[E] [Ab] [Em]
[Cm] [F] [C]
[B] [Am]
[A] Okay.
That's the intro to Angie.
A very fun piece to play.

[G] [Cm]
