_ [G] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [C#] _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ [B] _ _ Today I'm going to teach [C#] you how to play Autumn Leaves.
I've had a lot of requests to make a tutorial on this song ever since I [D#] uploaded my cover
of the song maybe three years ago now.
Sorry it's taken so long, but let's get right into it.
So I start with the melody.
_ [C#] _ [Em] _ _ [G#] My ring finger is on the seventh fret of the fourth string, sliding up to the [Am] ninth fret
on the fourth string.
[Em]
My pointer finger lands on the [C#] sixth fret of the third string, middle [G] finger to the
seventh fret of [Dm] the third string.
_ [C#] First chord is [Em] an E minor 7. _
[G] So all together that sounds [A] like this.
[C#] The [G] _ _
_ next chord is an [A] A7, _ _ D major [F#m] 7, _ G [G] major 7, _ _ C sharp minor [G#] 7 flat [C#] 5, _ _ F sharp [F#] 7, _ B minor [Bm] 7.
_ That's the first part.
So [G] call that the verse or the A section.
[C#m] You repeat that. _
[G] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ [F#m] _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [B] _ _ _
[F#] _ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ So once you know that, then we can [F] go to the B section.
But before we do that, I want to talk about that strumming pattern.
So the strumming [G] pattern slowed down sounds like this.
_ _ _ [Cm]
What that is is down, mute, up down, [Em] up down.
_ _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ Then when I get to the C sharp [A#] minor 7 [C#] flat 5, _ _ _ that's really [D] just hammering those quarter notes.
I'm lifting up my fingers on my left [E] hand just slightly on that up stroke.
[A#] That's what gives that [F#m] kind of [Gm] scraping sound.
[C#] _ _ _ [A#] And the last time I'm playing [G#] down up down like the [F#] other pattern that I showed you. _
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ [N]
So once you're comfortable with the A section, you're comfortable with that strumming pattern
that I showed you, we can move on to the B section.
And the great thing about this song is that it just reuses the chords that we used in
the A section, but it changes the order of them.
So this time we're starting on the C sharp minor 7 flat 5.
And I'm using that second pattern that I showed you toward the end of the progression.
So down, up, [G] down, up, down, up, down with the muting in [C#] between. _
_ Then it [C] goes to the F [F#] sharp 7, _ _ B minor [Bm] 7, _ D minor 7 again, _ [G] E minor 7, _ _ _ [A] A7, _ [F#m] D major 7, _ _ _ _
C [C#] sharp minor 7 flat 5, _ _ [F#] F sharp 7, [Bm] B minor 7, _ _ _
_ _ [N] C sharp minor 7 flat 5, [C#] only one strum,
_ [F#] F sharp minor 7, _ [Bm] B minor [C#] 7.
So that last part when I told you to only strum once, that sounds like this.
_ When [F#] autumn leaves start [Bm] to fall.
_ Then back [G#] to the beginning of the song.
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
[Em] _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ [Bm] _
So that's the [N] whole song, and it just goes between those two sections.
I realize there's a lot of chords in this song, and it can be kind of confusing, but
I really [A#] recommend breaking it into two parts.
Try to learn the A section, then come back and learn the B section a couple days later.
Just practice one section at a time.
[A] I know you guys can do it.
