We're in the key of E.
It's a fairly simple bass line at least
regarding to the notes.
It can be a bit tricky to get the rhythm right but if
you follow the tab that you can download for free if you're a member of
playbassnow.com just follow the link below here.
Okay let's start with the
bass line.
_ 1 2 3 [D] 4.
_ [Em] _
_ _ _ First part, first three notes are thumbed.
A pickup _ [A] note up
to the start of the first bar.
1 2 3 4.
Then we are on the 1 on the first bar.
So the first note, the pickup note is B.
_ [D] Then comes the _ _ _ D on the A string.
[Gm] [E] E _ 7th fret.
All thumb.
3 4.
[D] _ [E] And then comes three plucked notes on the higher _ _ on the G
string. _
[D] E E [E] _ E.
So we have 1 2 3 4.
[D] _ [Em] _
_ _ _ _ And it's a bit tricky to get this rhythm
_ _ _ _ _ 3 4.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
It's actually an 8th note and a 16th note that comes just before the beat 3.
Then an 8th note after the beat of 3.
But sometimes I use my thumb to to help me
to support me playing these kind of bass lines with a lot of syncopated 16th
notes.
So listen to this 3 and 4. _ _ _
_ That can be hard to get just plucking those.
Listen to this instead.
3 4. _ _ _
I have this. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ That's actually_
Then we are playing an
8th note followed by two 16th notes.
_ _ _ And _ _ that can be easier to to hit that that
16th note that comes just before the the third beat.
Use these support strokes in
the thumb.
I do that a lot actually.
But you don't have to do it.
I don't think
Larry Graham does it.
He just plays this 3 and [D] 4.
[Em] _ _ _
_ _ But you can do 3 4 _ with _ _ this little supporting thumb stroke.
Okay that's the
first part.
Second part is more or less the same.
So I'll play the first and
second.
3 and [D] 4.
[Em] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ [B] So we just omit the last E.
And sometimes he's playing this
_ _ B and sometimes he doesn't play it.
So it can also sound like this 3 and [D] 4.
[Em] _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ [E] _ _ [D] _
_ _ [E] _ _ [D] _ [C#] _ _ [Em] _
_ _ That's the whole part.
So we have the first part, _ _ second [F#m] part _ [D] and then the
third part is the same as the first.
_ _ [F#] _ [Bm] _ _
[C#] Fourth part is a hammer-on from C sharp
to D [E] and then the open E string.
_ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ So it's play the whole bass line again from the
top.
Very slowly.
1 _ 2 and 3 and 4.
_ [F#] _ _ [Em] _
_ _ [Bm] _ _ _ [E] _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ [Bm] _
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [C#] _ _ _ [D] _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _
And to get these [Em] pluck notes short as it [E] should be, what I do when I play the note
I immediately lift it off the fret _ as _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ opposed to long notes.
[D] _ [E] _ [D] _ So it should sound
like this 3 and 4.
[A] _ _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ [Em] _ _ [Dm] _
[C#] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ [B] And sometimes you can know that's funky if you play the first _
thumb note on the 1 and the 1 and [D] [D] these are D and E like this 3 and 4.
[E] _ [D] _
_ _ _ [E] _ [Bm] _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ [D] _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ [Em] Short, _ [D] _ _
[E] _ _ long.
The long ones I did a slide.
_ _ _ [D] The [E] _ [D] slide sounds cool and sometimes I do a
strum, play a power chord.
_ [A] _ _ [Em] _ _ [D] [E] Okay _ _ [D] _ [E] _ [D] _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [A] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [A]
go [E] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [E] _ practice your thank you for let me be myself.
See ya! _ _

_ _ _ may be myself.

Very slowly.
1 _ 2 and 3 and 4.

The long ones I did a slide.
_ _ _ [D] The [E] _ [D] slide sounds cool and sometimes I do a

_ [A] _ _ [Em] _ _ [D] [E] Okay _ _ [D] _ [E] _ [D] _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [A] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [A]
go [E] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [E] _ practice your thank you for let me be myself.
