Hey, it's Paul from howtoplaybass.com. This is the next in our quick guide series of videos.
This is the main parts of Black Magic Woman by Santana.
I've played this a number of times with different bands,
never played the kind of Latin-y outro version that you'll find on the original.
So in this quick guide
we're going to concentrate on the sections prior to that.
Sections we've got, we've got the intro when there's kind of like a melodic guitar
solo.
Then we've got the second guitar solo where things get a little rockier and that guitar solo
echoes the melody of the main tune.
The third section we're going to look at, this is like an eight bar piano vamp
where it just plays on the D minor chord.
For completeness sake I've put this in.
You can just play the D minor kind of riff pattern that you'll see in the tutorial
seven times and then the stab on the D.
And then finally there's a
12 bar format which is used for the verses.
One quick note, in the
initial
guitar solo, sorry the second guitar solo where the kind of guitar takes the melody of the tune,
there's an extra bar at the end.
So it's a 13 bar section whereas the verses are 12 bar sections.
So do watch for that if you're playing it authentically.
If you're playing it in a working band and your guitarist is playing it
with the more normal 12 bar section where the 12 bar ends on the stab [F] on the D, then
moderate,
modify what you're playing and only play
12 bars.
As with previous
quick guide videos, each section will be played at performance tempo with a
soundalike backing track.
This one's generated from the stems from the Guitar Hero game that you can find on the internet.
So it's pretty authentic.
And then following that you'll hear a slower play along with [F] just a
metronomic slowed down drum beat.
Both of the video segments will have picture-in-picture technology
so you can see close-ups [E] of both hands, picking hand and fretting hand.
So that's the intro to Black Magic Woman by Santana.
Let's get on and actually listen to the intro of the tune with backing track and get on with the tutorial.
