How to Play "Beach Baby" by Bon Iver Tutorial chords

Hi, I'm Dermot from the Yellowbird Project, wearing the Boney Bear shirt, and I'm going
to teach you a Boney Bear song.
This is from the Blood Bank EP, and it's the song Beach Baby.
And when I first heard this song, I thought it was [E] kind of generic, and it didn't leave
any impression on me.
But the more I listen to it, it's a really nice short song, and I don't know, I really like it.
It's a nice little lullaby.
So the song's really, really easy.
A lot of it's in his voice, because he has that Boney Bear voice.
And so the way to play it, my guitar is tuned down a half a step, he plays it tuned [B] standard,
but it's easier to sing this way anyway.
So whatever you want.
The chords are the exact same, whether it's tuned up or not.
So the chords are very basic.
C, F, E [Db] minor, A minor, [E] G basically, or bass notes.
So a lot of it's in the picking pattern.
[Gb] So it starts out with a full C chord.
A C chord's normally just this.
A full one, your ring finger [E] is actually on the third fret, [B] sixth string, and your pinky's beneath it.
[Gb] Okay?
So the song starts out kind of mid-strum almost, with a
He picks that note.
[B]
So the strumming pattern is this throughout the entire song.
Picks a bass note with his thumb, whatever the bass note ends up being.
So he picks it, strums down twice, and then up once with his thumb.
[E] [B] Down, down, up, down, down, up, pick, down, down, up, pick, down, [E] down, up, pick.
[Ebm]
[Gb] [B]
[E] Okay, [B]
[Ebm] so the intro
I'm gonna do the intro and I'll just sing [E] the chords like a goof, so you get it.
Okay, so it [Gb] starts out on the C thing.
[B]
[E] F, [B] E minor, leave it.
C, E minor.
And [Ebm] [A] what I like to [B] do for the E minor is I leave my pointer finger on the first fret,
second string, and then I take it off sometimes.
[Ebm] [Ab] You don't have to, I think [Em] he actually just does an E minor, but you know, whatever you like.
So, [B] [Ebm]
[Abm] A minor, [E]
F, [B] C, E minor, [Abm]
A minor, [Gb] G [Abm] bass note.
[Gb] You can use your pinky, so you leave the A minor chord, you can use your pinky to hit
that G bass note, [Abm] or you can take your [Gb] ring finger off and hit it.
[B] I usually [D] do it that way.
[Abm] [B]
Okay, back to C chord, and then the song starts.
So remember the strumming pattern.
When you're out, [E] tell your lucky one [B] to know that you'll leave.
[Abm]
Don't [E] you look [B] when you're fleeing.
I'd like to [Abm] not hear you keep.
[B] I really don't know what he's singing.
Only hope, [E] tell your coffee [B] one, [Ebm] [B]
but don't hurry and speak.
[Ebm] [Abm] [E] Once in a time, put [B] it down,
[Ebm] and you're here [Abm] on the beat.
[Gb] [E]
You clutch [Abm] clicking, ee,
[Gb] ee, ee, ee.
[Db]
[Abm] So, it's the very last part of the song, it's a short song.
A minor, [Gb] G bass note, [F]
[Eb] D bass note.
[Gb] So you go from that [Fm]
to [Db] a D bass note.
[E] [B]
So, [E] you clutch [Abm] clicking A minor, [B] G [Db] to D to [E] F.
[B] E minor, leave it on E minor for three counts.
Then it's that slide guitar outro.
So the chords over that are C, [E] [Ebm]
[B] E, and the way I do this solo is I go,
so C, pick the last [Db] string.
[B] [Abm] [B] I just kind of play around with the notes.
[E]
[Abm] D, E.
[Dbm] [B]
[G] So for that [Ab] part I go hit the A minor.
[B]
And then I put [Gb] my pinky on the third fret, first [Abm] string.
[B]
And then I slide up to the eighth and tenth fret, pointer finger on the eighth fret [G] of the fifth string,
and your pinky on the tenth fret of the second [B] string.
[Eb] So I just pick [Db] those two notes, then slide down to seventh fret.
So fingers in the same position, same [E] string.
[B]
But I slide down to seventh and eighth fret, and then third and fifth fret.
[Dbm]
[B] [Gb]
[Abm] [B]
[E] [B]
[Gb] [Abm]
[E] [B]
So, okay?
So it's really, a lot of it's in the strumming.
That's the way [E] he strums it, do it however you want.
And it's a really short, simple song.
So sing it to someone who's going to sleep and, [D] you know, it'll be [Gb] the perfect song for that.
So, you know, leave comments if you have any [A] questions or if I went too fast or anything like that.
