Alright well thanks for checking that out and with that said let's break this song down.
Let's break down how to play Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain as recorded by Willie Nelson on guitar.
Now this song's in the key of E and we're going to start off with this little country
sounding intro where we alternate our bass note and that's one of the key things to getting
this song is sort of that country alternating bass.
Here's what the intro [E] sounds like. _ _
_ _ So it's a little two bar intro and [A] what we're going to do is we're going to hammer from
the open A string [E] into the second fret here and we're thinking about an E chord.
We're sort of [B] hammering into that E shape but my other fingers are already [A] in place
because right after I do that [E] hammer I'm going to do a down up with the strum hand.
And then we're going to play the sixth string and then a [A] down up.
So it's going to alternate like this.
[E] _ _ _
And then you can just play the fifth [E] string and then the sixth string.
Now we do that for the first two bars but then once the vocal comes in we switch to
the sixth string, fifth string which is your typical kind of country alternating bass pattern like this.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _
So I'm kind of counting this in two like one and a two and a one and a two and a one.
So that's an E and then a quick A there.
One and a two and a one and a two and a one and a two and a one and a [B] two and.
And that's a walk [Am] up and throughout this recording you'll hear the guitar do like these little
_ [E] kind of walk [Bb] downs and walk [A] ups.
So this is going to be the fifth string open to the first fret and then the second fret.
[B] And what we're doing is walking into the B7 which is the next chord here and that's two
one two open two.
Now for this chord we're going to alternate the fifth string to the sixth string there.
So I'm bringing my middle finger up and getting that little alternating bass.
[E] Then back to E.
_ So what I'm really trying to do with this alternating bass is play the root on the [B] downbeat
and then the fifth on the [E] chord as the alternate bass note.
So like for E it's going to be, _ _ _ [B] for B7 it's going to be. _ _
_ Okay so one more time on the verse it's going to sound like this.
One and a [E] two and a.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [B] Walk up to B7 _ [E] back to E.
Then that goes again. _
_ _ _ _ _ Walk up [B] _
_ back [E] to E.
_ Then we do a little different walk up here.
Here we're going to go.
_ [A] _ And that's a really fun walk up that gets us up to the A chord.
We're going to [F] play E F F [Ab] sharp G sharp.
Or if I [E] played the frets here, if I said the frets it would be zero one [Ab] two four.
Now rhythmically those are going to be eighth [E] notes.
So one and a two and a one and a two [A] and a.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] Then back to E.
_ _ [B] Then B7.
Then a little walk down.
[Gb]
[E] And we're back to kind of the first A section there.
So [B] that walk down off the B7 goes, we're doing a hammer on to the second fret.
Then open [Ab] fourth fret on the [Gb] sixth string.
Second fret on the sixth string.
[Ab] _
[E] So the walk up to the [F] bridge goes back [A] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] to E.
Now sometimes [D] you'll hear a little [A] D in there.
It's like a D over [D] A.
This is a little bit more advanced but you can go to that shape there.
Four two three.
The A and the [A] bass.
So that would be. _ _ _ _
_ _ [E] And then back to E.
_ _ _ [B]
B7.
Walk down.
[E] Back to the first part. _ _ _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ [E] And then we do a little tag here.
So that's just E A E.
And that's [B] how we end.
So we come off the B7.
_ _ _ [E] And we're back to E A. _ _
_ Have fun practicing Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain as recorded by Willie Nelson.
Make sure to take it slow and focus on that alternating bass.
That's [Gm] really going to help you get a classic country sound.
