G'day viewers Mick E here Blue Sky Mine.
Everyone loves it.
They love the harp a little bit
Past the beginner level starting to get into some intermediate stuff
So it's played on a D flat harp in third position.
So the key of the song is E flat minor
Probably doesn't mean a lot to you
And a lot of people won't have a D flat harp.
It's not a very common key
There is a version of it on YouTube played by Midnight Oil that uses a C harp
It's the one that live at the Enmore Theatre in Newtown.
So have a look there.
It's probably not played as
Well as the recorded version by Peter Garrett
It's live, but if you don't have a D flat harp, it'll give you something to work with now
Before you even start you need to know how to bend if you don't know how to bend go back to
Some of my videos on bending practice your bending
But you need to be able to bend draw four draw five draw six
And I'll just show you what those bends need to sound like.
Here's draw four
He's not bent
and
[Eb] five
six
[F] [Gb]
[N] So we're pulling the tongue back down into our throat and changing the direction of the air from straight
To down to get that bend
All right, so if you can't play the bench you won't be able to play so there's also another technique that's important in this song
and that's the slide up and
It's it's usually to hold five
But sometimes to four and it's just putting your mouth on and being able to slide up to the hole
You also need to be able to play individual holes puckering up and a nice
Straight narrow airflow to play one hole at a time
So for example at the start we slide [Ab] up to the five
[N] Common technique on heart because it sounds good
But it also helps you know where to stop you can't see what you're doing so it helps
You know when you're on the right note
So it's important in this song because it gives it a nice feel
So that's step one
Take a look at the tab
Looks a bit complex, but and you need to practice it the other thing
this is probably the type of song if you get the the key elements of it like that sliding up and the bending and the
draw five is one of the
main notes that's played you can improvise a little bit you can get away with a little bit of
Just making something up and playing a bit rough because it's that style of so I'll play the first part
Where we slide up to that draw five [Eb] and bend it a few times
Comes down to a chord two three four draw to finish that off
And then we have all those draw ones with some blow ones
And I'll just play a bit of a pattern on those that sound similar
And you need to practice that and give yourself [Ab] something to work with
And [C] that's where I think you can probably get away with you know a little bit rough
It doesn't have to be perfect
Then we slide up to that draw six and the same we bend it again
Then we'll fatten our mouth up to play the holes either side of six
[Eb]
[G]
[Abm] And then from there to finish off the introduction we just slide up to the draw four and there's some just some bends on the
draw four and a
draw five [C]
[Eb] now that brings us to the solo in the middle of the song and
Again that slide up to draw five the most important note of the heart part in this song
There's also a draw two in there before you slide up to the five probably not that important
but it's in there and it goes like this and
[Abm]
[C]
Then we've got the the [Ab] bending and then there's a from the draw four we bend
To a run what I call a run down it just sort of hooks up over that
draw three draw two
[E] [Ab]
[Db] [N] couple of paths on the three two
[Ab] Same again slide up to draw five
That's it it's all there is to it
So have a practice have a play you should be able to get something if you can do those four five six bends
You should be able to get something that
sounds similar enough [A] to get away with if you gig at your gigs if you not a
overly committed heart player you just want to
dabble which a lot of covers players do should be able to get away with it with this song and
remember
