Welcome, YouTube, to my first tutorial.
Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
Today I want to show you how to play Chamber of Reflection by Mack DeMarco off of Salad Days, his second album.
And I guess before getting started, it should be noted that he samples this piano melody from Shigeyo Sakito, something like that, an Asian artist.
And that song is called The Word I, I, or The Word To.
And it's a good song in its own right, so I suggest checking that out.
And also, as you can probably hear, this song has two keyboard parts.
It has a chord part and then it has a melody line.
So I'll show you both, and I'll start with the melody line.
And then I can't play with both hands since I have to hold my camera.
But I'll use my computer's video camera to show you both parts at the end.
So to get started, we start [Em] at G up here.
So it goes G, E, D.
[Gb] And then it walks down from C, B, A.
[Em] [D] [Em] So once you get the hang of that, [D] [C] [E] so then it walks back up.
[C] [G] [Em] [B]
[D] [Gm] [Fm] And then from there, it skips over C and it goes [Em] D, E, [Bm] F sharp.
So I'll show [Em] you all that.
[B] [Fm] [Bm]
And then from [Em] there
[Bm] [Em]
[B] So [Gb] [G] [B]
[Em]
just practice each of those parts.
[Abm] You know, [Bm] slowly.
[Em]
And it should be noted, the second time through playing that, because it plays twice,
it leaves out that last note.
So it just goes Instead [Bm] of
So the first [E] time is [B] at the ending, and then the [E] second time is just
So that's pretty much the melody line.
There's really no other parts to it.
Then I'll talk about the chords here.
So there's [Am] A minor.
[Ab] And if you don't know how to play that, that's [Am] A, C, E.
So you do that for two beats, you hold that for two beats, like that.
And then you go to B minor, which is pretty much just bouncing.
[Bm]
And I just like to play it up higher, it's a little easier.
[Am] [Ab] And then the [C] next chord is C.
So you pretty much just kind of walk [Ab] up there, and you hold the C, [Am] the last chord, for four beats instead.
So you hold the first two for two each.
[Bm] [C]
[N] So pretty straightforward, [G] but then the second [Am] time through,
[Bm] you play an E minor at the end [Em] and hold that for four beats.
[G] And so that's pretty much the chords for the verse.
During the chorus, I think you play E minor at the end both times.
So it's pretty straightforward.
And then leading up to the chorus, he plays those same chords, but just higher up octaves.
And I think I have a setting that kind of sounds like it.
Yeah, Translant.
[Am] [Bm]
So [Em] pretty cool.
And that's pretty much it for how to play the entire song, really.
It's nothing too complicated.
I'll switch over to my laptop, and then I'll play it.
You might not be able to see it that well, but you'll get the hang of it.
And one more important thing to note.
Mack DeMarco always messes with the pitch of his song,
and you want to set the hertz tuning of your piano to 432.
So standard is 440.
So you want to take it down to 432 [Am] to match the record
so when you're playing along with it, it won't sound out of tune.
So I kind of detuned it a bit.
[Bm] [Em]
[Bm] [B]
Okay, so here's [Am] both parts together.
[Bm] [C]
[Am] [Bm]
