Part 4 Finger Picking.
[B] _ Hi guys, it's Shane [G#] again.
Yes, I'm going to keep cutting my head off on these videos so you can see what my hands are doing.
[G] Okay, we're going to talk about getting [G#] more out of your Cigar Box Guitar
and we're going to talk about getting rid of the pick.
A lot of you guys start out playing your 3-string Cigar Box Guitars, you use a pick
and you're playing the [N] great blues and rock power chords.
That's awesome, you can get a lot out of [G] it.
But, _ _ _ _ _
[F#] _ if you want to get a little more advanced than you're playing, throw the pick away.
Take your thumb and [G] your index finger, put your [N] thumb on the low string,
your index finger on the high string.
The index finger, in this 3-string picking technique,
the index finger pretty much plays the high string [G] exclusively.
Now, let me play for you a little and then I'll show you how I'm doing it. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _

_ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [G] _ _ _ [C] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ [G] _ _ Okay, this type of [A] finger picking, although it may sound complex, is [G] very easy.
And I'm going to get a little closer to the camera here so you can see what I'm doing.
This [C#] is going to take some practice to get used to if [F#] you have never gotten into finger picking on a regular guitar before.
But all I'm doing is I'm [G] keeping my index finger pulling that high string
and my thumb is alternating between the low G and the middle D. _ _ _ _
_ _ This is the essence of my finger picking.
In fact, whenever I was first working on it years ago,
I would sit in front of the TV and not play [D#] anything with my fretting hand and [G] just practice this.
_ So that thumb _ _ alternating between the two strings would become something natural.
It would slowly burn into my brain. _ _ _ _
_ In our previous lessons, [A] I've told you about the stubby slide.
We've talked about playing leads on [E] the high string, on a single string.
Well, the finger picking can bring it all together.
Because either you can be playing your leads all on one string, whether it be the middle string,
like I showed you Bela [F#] Lugosi's funeral on one of the earlier videos.
[F#] But this finger picking can bring it [G] all together. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _

_ [D] _ _ _ _ _
_ [B] Like I said, I use the stubby slide to get that middle string and play my [G] entire leads on the middle string. _ _ _

_ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] So that's it.
That's my little three string finger picking technique. _
There's so many different variations you can do [G] with it.
But once you get the _ basic alternating [B] thumb thing going, everything else seems to come naturally after [N] that.
So there we go.
There's the next one for you.
Have fun playing your Cigar Box Guitar and I'll see you again on another video.
Bye.
