Hey, Guitar Pilgrim here and today we're going to play Country Roads.
Let's take a look [A] at the
chords of the verse.
We're going to start with the G chord, third, second and little finger.
[F#m] E minor, second and third finger.
[E] On to the D, first, second and [A] third finger.
Make sure your
third finger is near the fret and you do want to mute the low E string when [F#m] you play a D chord,
in any song really, with your thumb.
[E] And lastly the C.
We're going to start with the third,
[D] second [A] and first finger.
[B] Now the strumming pattern is [E] quite difficult, so start very slow
and remember also to play quite soft if you can.
We have our G chord and here's the basic [A] pattern
and the first thing you want to do is play this pattern very soft.
Then next you want to play the
first strum on the bottom strings and all the other strums on the top strings.
Okay, let's see
if we can play a little bit of the verse.
Now keep in mind you have to play two strumming
patterns in one bar.
Make sure your wrist is very loose because you have to play very soft.
Here we go.
G, [F#m] E minor, mute the low [E] E string, [D] C and [A] back to G.
Again G and [F#m]
[E] mute, third finger
first [D] and [A] back to G.
Now there aren't any new chords in the chorus but we are going to do
something [E] different with the strumming, so let's take a look.
We have our G chord [F#m] and if you're a
beginner I suggest you play the [D] exact same strumming pattern as in the verse but you just
play everything [A] a little bit louder.
[E] [F#m]
[D] [A]
And if you're a bit more advanced you want to have an accent on
the second strum and also the last down strum.
Here's the strumming pattern.
If I mute all the
strings with my left hand in the verse [F] we have this, but in [E] the chorus you want this.
[A] You can
tell the difference.
So try to go for the two accents if you're advanced but if that's a little
bit too difficult just stick with the normal strumming pattern and just play everything a
little bit louder.
Okay let's go ahead and play the whole chorus.
Let's see if you can play along.
And G, on to [E] D, D [F#m] minor, [D] C chord and back [A] to G.
[B] Remember to mute, [D] on to C, back to [A] G.
And in the [E] bridge we have two new chords.
We have the F and the D7.
Let's start with the F.
[D] Third,
the little finger, [A] second and the bar [E] with your first finger.
And this is [F#m] how you normally would
want to play the [G] F chord.
Keep in mind that your [A] thumb is behind the neck, third [E] finger pressing
against the little finger.
If your F chord doesn't sound good it's probably your third finger,
probably way too much niddle left.
You want it pressing against the little finger.
[F#m] And the last chord we have to learn is the D7, [D] second, first and third finger.
[A] And same as with
the normal D you want to mute [E] the low E string.
And there we have all the chords of the [D] entire
song.
Let's go ahead and play the whole bridge.
Now the [A] strumming pattern is exactly the same as
in the chorus [F#m] so a little bit louder.
Let's start with the E minor.
Here we go,
[E] [A] on to C,
[D]
[A] and remember [E] to mute.
[F#m] E minor.
[G] Let's go for the bar, [D] C [A] and G.
[E] On to [Bm] D7.
[A]
[F#m]
[E] [D]
[A]
[F#m] [E]
Mountains [D] growing [A] like a breeze, country roads take [E] me home to the [F#m] place [D] I grew up.
West [A] Virginia,
[E] mountain mama, take [D] me home.
[A] Country roads, all my [F#m] memories gather round her.
[E]
Modest lady, [D] stranger to [A] blue water.
Dark and dusty, [F#m] painted on the sky,
[E] misty taste of [D] moonshine, teardrop [A] in my eye.
Country roads, [E] take me home to [F#m] the place
[D] I grew up.
West [A] Virginia, mountain [E] mama, [D] take me home.
Country [A] roads,
[F#m] I hear her [E] voice in [A] the morning
hour.
She calls [D] me, radio [A] reminds me of [E] my home far away.
[F#m] Driving down [G] the road I get [D] a feeling
[A] that I should have been [E] home yesterday, yesterday.
[A] Country roads, take me [E] home to [F#m] the place I [D] belong.
[A] West Virginia, mountain [E] mama, [D] take me home.
[A] Country roads, country roads, [E] take me home to the [F#m] place [D] I belong.
West [A] Virginia, [E] mountain mama, take [D] me home.
[A] Country roads, take [E] me home.
Country [A] roads,
[E] take me home.
Country [A] roads.

Now keep in mind you have to play two strumming
patterns in one bar.
Make sure your wrist is very loose because you have to play very soft.
Here we go.
G, [F#m] E minor, mute the low [E] E string, [D] C and [A] back to G.
Again G and [F#m]
[E] mute, third finger
first [D] and [A] back to G.
Now there aren't any new chords in the chorus but we are going to do
something [E] different with the strumming, so let's take a look.
We have our G chord [F#m] and if you're a

[E] [F#m]
[D] [A]
And if you're a bit more advanced you want to have an accent on

Here's the strumming pattern.

Here we go,
[E] [A] on to C,
[D]
