How To Play Elton John Daniel on Guitar (intro only) chords
Start Jamming...
In part one of the lesson on Daniel, we're just going to look at the intro running from
bars one to eight of your tab.
There's quite a lot going on in there, so we'll give it a video to itself.
Here's how it's going to sound.
[Em] [Dm] [A]
[G]
[C]
[Ab]
So we're in the key of C.
We're starting with a normal C chord.
And we're going to strum [C] down, down, up, touch, up, down, up.
Now [G] whenever I say touch in this song, I'm talking about a dab somewhere [C] around the bass
end or the middle of the chord.
It's just for texture.
It's just implied if you're in any doubt, miss it.
Consider it a missed down strum.
But often missed down strums are actually just hinted at, just touched on the strings.
One, two, and three, and four, and.
[G]
[Ab] The tab says to try and strum without hitting the first string, and I'm just muting the
first string by having the index finger resting on it.
But that's not really important.
It won't matter if you [G] get it.
[F]
[F] So that's bar one.
That's quite straightforward.
But bar [C] two begins the riff or the lick part of the intro.
So again, we're going to touch, come up from the first string, [G] little finger to the second
string third fret, come up from that string, take the little finger off, come up from the
second string out of the normal C [C] chord, touch, open the second [G] string, come up from the second
string, [C] and touch.
Now that raises another thing that we have to cover in a song like Daniel.
Again, the [Ab] tab shows very specifically what it recommends that you should be playing.
That's always one of the dangers with tab in loose kind of songs that are really, where
the accompaniment is really falling out of the movement of the right hand.
Keeping the regular rhythm is more important, much more important, than specifically playing
the [C] exact strings that the tab says.
So when I say up from the first string, for example, I absolutely must get the first string.
I will want to get, to hear some of the second string, and I may hear some of the third as
well, that's absolutely fine.
[G] Similarly, coming from the second string at the third fret, up, I'm getting two, and I'm
hearing three on the way up, and if you get four as well, that's okay.
So it doesn't matter what you get, make sure as a minimum you get the top note of that chord.
[C]
So touch, up, up, up, [G] touch, up, touch.
[C] One, [G] and two, and three, and four.
[A] Now we're going to play D minor, but without the second string third fret.
The second string is open.
Strum as far as the second string, [D]
touch, [Dm] and up from the third string.
Then make a normal D minor shape, and just to fill out the bar with texture, a little
up, down, up, that's not emphasized, it's just hinted at.
[D] One, two, [Dm] and three, and four, and.
Stay in the D minor shape, touch, which is sort of around the middle of the chord, up
from the first string, open the first string, come up [A] from the first string, up from the
[D] second string, and then make D minor [E] seven, where the second string is now at the first
fret, [G] up, that's the end of the melody, and then you can, if you want to fill the bar
out, hint at another up from the second fret.
[Dm] One, and [A] two, and three, [G] and four, and, with that little hint being on the and of four.
[Eb]
That's bars one to four, let's put those back together slowly.
[C]
[G] [Dm]
[Am]
[G] And you might notice in there that I'm making sure that I emphasize those notes that are
the melody that you hear in the song, and I'm de-emphasizing strums or notes that are
just texture added to fill out the bar.
We're at bar five, we want a G chord, but add to it the second string at the first fret.
Gsus4.
Strum that chord, preferably only as far as the second string, but again if you get the
first it won't matter.
Touch is now sort of six and five.
Take the second string finger off, come up from the second string, touch, and for texture,
hint it up down up.
One, two, and, three, and, four, and.
Bar six, touch, up from the first string should be at the third fret, first string now at
the first fret, up, first string [Em] open, up, [G] touch, second string third fret, up.
One and two and three and four and.
It rings across and four and.
And the hard work is now done because you've finished with two bars of C, where after [C] a
down up down on C, we'll add the fourth string at the third fret, and continue the bar, up,
[C]
up, down, up.
So down, up, down, up, up, down, up.
[G]
[C] And repeat it at bar eight.
[G] That's your intro, at least an arrangement for acoustic guitar of [A] it, and let's put that back [C] together.
[Dm] [D]
[G]
[C]
And that takes us into the [Abm] verse, but there was a lot of material there [Eb] in the intro,
so what we'll [Ab] do is break the verse out into lesson number two.
In fact, in lesson number two we'll cover the
