Hey, it's Matt Scandall from Vertical Horizon and I'm going to teach you how to play everything you want.
So a quick note about playing Vertical Horizon songs in general is we tend to tune our guitars
down a half step.
So instead of that being your E string, low E string, [Eb] it's actually_
So I'll just go through the strings real quick and you can tune up.
That's my E, [Db] that's my A, that's my [Gb] B, that's my G, that's [Eb] my B, and that's my E.
[Ab] And for the [Bb] introduction of the song, it's actually as much what I'm playing, but it's
also this pedal [A] called the MXR Phase 90.
Turn [Ab] the speed all the way down so it's as slow as it'll go.
Take your bridge pickup _ [Bb] tone control and roll it back so instead of [Ebm] sounding_
That it sounds a little bit darker.
I'm going to roll it down to about three.
_ [Ab] And then this is how you play the intro [Bbm] figure. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ [Ab] You're picking both the E and B string with the flesh of your [Eb] fingers.
So it's like_
That's basically what I'm doing with my right hand.
_ And then [Bbm] the left hand plays a D, an E, [Gb] a [F] G, and an F sharp on the B string.
And [Ab] the last bit is a C note and a B note.
_ And for the verse part of everything you want, you [C] want to roll your tone knob back all the
way [Bb] up and take off your trusty Phase 90.
But the key to the verse figure, the chords are A minor, E [Bbm] minor, a G but it has a B in
the bass, and [Gb] a C. _
But the key [E] to playing that figure is to [Bbm] hammer on the chords for the A and the E.
So it goes like this.
Three, four.
_ [Ebm] _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ [Abm] _ _ [Ebm] _ _ [Gb] _
_ _ _ _ [Ab] _ So the chords for the [Abm] chorus are _ A minor, [Gb] G, [Ebm] _
E minor, [Db] _ D.
[Abm] _ And then it changes [Ab] a little bit at the end, but I'll show you how it goes.
But the key is to leave the G note ringing on your high E string.
_ _ Play real steady and strong.
So it goes like this.
Three, four.
_ [Gb] _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ _ [Ebm] _
_ [Eb] _ _ [Abm] _ _ [Gb] _ _ [Ebm] _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _ [Ab] _
_ [B] _ _ _ So the chords at the [Abm] end there go A minor, [Ebm] _ E minor, [Ab] D, [Gb]
C.
And that's how the chord [N] ends.
_ _ So the bridge of everything you want has two sort of distinct parts going on.
I'll teach you the rhythm guitar part first.
It goes like this.
Three, [Eb] four. _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ [Ab] _ _ [B] _ [Gb] And it repeats that.
Those chords are E minor, a C with a G in the bass. _ _
_ [Ebm] E minor, [Bb] D, _ D sus, or D9 with the [Eb] open _ [Bb] E string. C.
[B] _
_ And the thing that's kind of [Ab] nice about playing the G on the C chord is it adds a subharmonic
to the chords.
It implies a lower octave that's not actually there.
I'll just play the two for you.
So this is a regular [B] C chord. _ _ _ _
And then I'll add the G. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ This [Ab] kind of makes everything sound fuller.
And the second part for the bridge _ [Eb] is you [Gb] turn on your trusty Phase 90.
_ And it goes like this up here on the B string.
Three, [Eb] four.
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _
_ _ [Ab] Those two parts together kind of are what [N] make the bridge
