Foggy Mountain Breakdown, the up the neck version.
I do like Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
It's one of the you know
one of the songs most associated with a banjo and
I'm gonna [E] do a choke here
and what a choke is basically you're bending the string or you're lifting up the string and
In this case you're doing it on the B and you're lifting
from the 10th fret
Pushing it up until [Bbm] it's the same note [E] as the 11th fret on the B.
So
Now your finger might be strong enough to do with one finger
You might need two fingers behind it because that'll give you a little more power
[G] Or you can even do [D] three
[G] So it's a [E] bend, bend, middle, thumb, index, middle, thumb
Then it repeats, [E]
repeats [G] a third time
And then you want to play the portion of the D or the G in the D shape
So it's 9 8
Play them together
then 6 together
Then you're playing the E minor [Em] in this shape, which is a 9 8 and 9
[G] And [Eb] you want to emulate this.
[Em]
So what you're gonna do is you're gonna do a [Ab] slide from the 8th fret
[Db] On the G string to the [Ebm] 9th.
[Em] Now similar to this [Eb] they're both quarter notes
[Em]
[G] Same with [Eb] this and [D] [G]
[Em] a forward [G] back roll starting on the high G
[Em]
[D] This time you're gonna play the G
And it just repeats
[G]
[Cm] [G]
[Eb] Instead of doing this
I'm
[Em] gonna add just a little bit of [Gm] color by adding
the 11th fret on the B string
And [Eb]
[Em] [G] this is a Sally Gooden lick
And you
[Em] [G]
[Em] don't have to you can do the same lick as [Eb] we did in the in the previous measure
[Em]
I just like adding it because [D] I like making
just slight [Eb] variations
[G] Repeat of this
Now what you're gonna do is you're gonna slide [D] into a D and you're gonna do [Gb] it from the
9th fret with on the G sliding to the 11th fret
[Em] So it's this shape and all [F] you're gonna do is you're gonna move it up two bars and then this
Ring finger [D] is going to go up one fret.
So it's 12 10 11
Which is D?
[Em]
[D]
You're gonna do [N] another choke here and you're gonna do it on the 11th fret
B and you're going to bend [Gm] it up and again you can do
[Gb] If you if [D] you don't have the power and you're [B] gonna
[G] 12
But you're gonna [E] do 12th fret on the D [Gm] string
[G] So it's very similar [Am] to this
[Gm]
[G]
But I like to end on the G so
And I kind of like to [Em] a little bit of color [D] by playing the E minor [Em] on the end note
And what I'm gonna do is with this instead of going
so the
middle index thumb
Doing the D string the B string and the G string.
I'm gonna [G] double up on the B string
So it goes
[Em]
I'm just hitting the same string with one
[Ab]
[Em] [G]
Alternates hitting all [C]
three [G] strings so
[D] with a little bit of speed it would sound like this
[G]
[Em]
[A] [G]
[Em]
[A] [G] [E]
[Gm] [G]
[Gb]
[G] [Db] [G]
[Em] [E]
[Eb] [Em]
[A] [Em] [D]
[Gm] [G]
So that's the up the neck version of [Db] Foggy Mountain breakdown
I've done two other variations of it one is a
Beginner to intermediate level one is a little closer to the bluegrass version of Byro Scruggs
And of course, there's this and let's see if I [A] can get it
[G]
[Ebm] [Em]
[E] [Eb] [G]
[Gm]
[Em] There we [Gb] go
Up there.
So as I said, if you have any questions, please feel free to drop a line to me [N] and
If you want other songs tabbed out and instructional [G] videos, please feel free to ask [D] and
Hope that helps you [A] out
Happy picking as always and good
