What's up guys?
Yes, you clicked on it free falling.
Yes, you're gonna learn how to play it.
Yes, I'm Thomas from the band Radius
and let's break it down for you guys.
Yes, I have a capo on the first
fret and yes it helps.
Alright,
here we go.
The song is really easy to play.
There's only three chords.
You guys excited?
I am.
So here we go.
We're doing an E chord.
Oh man, I have a secret for you.
Tom Petty, he plays it a certain way and I'm gonna teach you that secret.
Okay?
So here's
I'll play it for you real quick
and then I'll tell you a little secret.
You ready?
[Bb] [F]
[Bb] [F]
[C] [F]
[Bb] [F]
[C] [F] Alright.
Did you see anything different in there?
Basically, here's the E chord.
So we're doing open E, [C] second fret,
[F] second fret, first fret on the G string, open, open.
That is our first chord of three.
Moving to our second chord, it's just gonna be
open A string, second fret on the D, second fret on the G string,
open, open.
It's an Asus2.
But Tom Petty puts
this finger on the first fret behind it.
It makes no difference in the sound other than the fact
he can do one of these.
Boom!
First chord.
See how I moved there?
But he keeps this finger
there.
It's brilliant and it comes with experience that, hey, I don't have to lift up my finger.
Because as we all know,
even in [Bb] Guitar Hero, the highest note gets
the pluck, gets the gold, [A] rather [Bb] than the lowest one
if you're on the same string.
[F] So, nice.
[C] So we're gonna change back to that [F] first chord, then
hit this chord once, then the first chord once,
[C]
and this is a B chord, okay?
So we're on second fret,
[G] fourth fret, fourth fret, okay?
We're doing a barre chord, and with this finger, I'm [F] muting this
bottom E string, [C] and I'm arcing my fingers up so I can let this
[Fm] B and the E string ring out under me.
I don't
[C] want to mute them, so I want to arc my
arms enough.
If you're having a hard time arcing, just push your elbow
out this way a little bit.
So you'll get a little
[Cm] Whoa!
There we go.
I got some arc in [F] everything.
So,
[Bb] [F]
[C] okay?
So,
[Cm] that's what Tom Petty is playing.
So, Mr.
Mike Campbell,
over there on the 12th string.
[F]
So we're getting this
nice, heavenly chords.
So it's [Eb] the D shape, okay?
This is our normal D chord.
We're sliding it up two frets, okay?
And we're just putting our pinky and letting go of it,
and then this is our third chord.
Keeping these same
two [E] fingers, like, it is like the D chord, but we're just moving [C] this fret down too.
So it's going [Fm] to be 4-5-2.
[F]
First one's 4-5-4, then 4-5-5,
[C]
okay?
So that's pretty simple.
So that's played on top
[F] of the other part, and so we're doing that.
[C] You learn these [F] three chords,
pull [Bb] out that capo, first fret, [F] people are going to start [C] singing.
They think [F] they know the words, [Bb] it's like
four verses, and [C] people always mix up the verses,
but that's the fun part of it.
[Bb] And then, once you're [F] towards the end,
[Bb] people go nuts,
okay?
And then this is when you bust out in two.
[F] [Bb]
[Cm] [F]
[C] So I'm just using those same chords,
just in [F] bar chord form, because everybody's already
ruined their lungs at this point in the song, so we're like, alright, I'm going rock mode.
Open,
[C] then second fret on the A,
I'm going to play that three times, [Bb]
then slide up to the fifth fret and seventh fret.
I'm just doing a two-finger chord.
[F]
Hit this three times, 1-2-3, [Bb] then slide this up and play this.
And we're actually going to play it six times,
because one's going to [F] overlap coming back [Fm] to it.
So 1-2 [Bb]-3-4 -5 [F]-6.
[Cm] So what I do is [Bb] I hit that six, [F] and then I hit two on the original one,
and [C] then I go all the way up to the seventh and ninth fret,
and then I play that five [F] times.
So it goes three, [Bb] then six,
[C] [Ab] [Eb] and the best way instead of counting is just feel it.
[F]
[Bb] [F]
[C] [F] Start over.
[Bb] [F]
[C] [Ab] Oh man, [F]
yeah, I'm free!
Man, that's it [D] guys.
