_ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [Dm] How's it going guys?
Thank you very much for tuning in to the video today.
This [Eb] is
a full tutorial and walkthrough for the song How I [Ab] Met My Ex.
I did do a more
basic walkthrough of the song a couple [Gm] years ago but it was a little bit
incomplete so this one is the [Dm] full thing.
So for the structure of the song it's
quite long but we've got a lot of repeating phrases [D] and we basically have
just three eight bar [Ab] phrases we need to learn to play the whole song.
I've
labeled [Gm] those eight bar phrases as A, B and C.
For the structure of the whole song
it looks something like this.
So [Eb] feel free to screenshot this and I'll put it
in the description as well.
There [Ab] is one exception to the three eight bar phrases
which is the [Gm] intro and that's basically just a simplified version of phrase A.
Okay so [D] we'll start with that.
Intro [E] looks like this.
[D] _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ [F] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ [Am] _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ Okay so that's our intro
which is a simplified version of A.
So we're starting here, both on this D and
the right hand we're going [Dm] those three notes up to _ _ _ _ [Gb] left hand just holding that [G] D.
Then we go to this chord.
[C] _
Left hand on the C.
Those three notes.
Then we have this little
tricky melody which [Am] goes.
_ [G] Okay so I'm playing.
_ Those are the first four notes.
I'm playing that with four three two three.
[Am] Then we play.
Those three.
_ _ _ Then we go [Gm] to this chord and _ _ we hit the G and the B flat again.
_ _ _ _ Then we hit the D in [D] the left hand
and go down these four notes.
_ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ Then B [Bb] flat in the left hand and D in the right hand.
D, [Gm] G.
_ [A] Then A in the left hand
and E in the [Am] right hand.
E, C.
[Dm]
Hit the D twice on its [Gm] own.
_ _ So that's a simplified version of A [Gb] which we used just for the intro, just for the first eight bars.
So I'll show you now the full version of A where basically what we're doing is adding in the bass
notes that come in the song and it makes it sound a lot fuller, a lot more exciting because the
harmonies change as well in some places.
The right [G] hand is exactly the same except for the last D,
that last note.
Instead of holding that for four beats we add on
[Am] _
these four notes to the end [G] and that's the right hand.
In the left hand we're going to add the [Dm] bass
notes so the whole thing looks like this.
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ That's the full version of [G] section A.
So you might have
noticed a couple of harmonic differences, especially [Gm] that B flat which changes to a G minor which is my
favourite bit.
So a lot of these notes are similar to [F] the intro version but we're going down [D] an octave.
So _ this is a D like before but we're now down here.
[Dm] Right hand's the same.
[C] _ Of course the same but now we're down to this C here. _
Then this melody again.
_ [G] Then we go to [Gm] this chord but this time the left hand we're playing B flat and G.
_ _ Okay so we [C] go from
this C down here.
_ _ [Gm] Like that.
_ _ [D] _
_ _ Holding this D down here for these four notes.
[A] _
Then where we just played a [Bb] B flat before we're now adding this G here like that.
And if you can't reach that, you can't make that leap, you can do that G there.
_ _ Then [Am] octaves in A. _
And then this D, [D] _ this low D.
Playing that with both, finishing [D] with _ [Gbm] those four notes.
And that's the full version of section A.
So we'll have a look at section B which is quite similar to A.
It's [A] actually maybe a little bit easier and it looks like this.
[Dm] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ [Gm] _ _ [A] _ _ [Am] _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ Okay starting [Dm] here.
Same melody actually as A, starts the same way.
_ _ [C] Then we hit the A on it's own instead of hitting the B [C] flat.
Hold this for four beats, C, E.
Then we go to this chord.
[Gm] _ _ Hitting the G, this G and then this B flat. _ _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ Holding that again, bass travels down.
[Bb] _
So this B flat, [D] one, two, three, four, [Bb] one.
And then F to [Eb] G in the right hand.
_ [A]
Then E [Gb] to C in the right hand.
[Bb] _ _ [Gm] _ _
[Am] _ _ _ [G] Then D on it's own, _ D on it's own.
[Am] And those four notes again [Gb] like in the full version of section [Gb] A.
So that's section B and then moving on to section C which is the [B] most unique I suppose from the other two.
It looks [Bb] like this.
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [Dm] _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Alright so we're starting here [Bb] with this E flat chord. _ _ _
And we're holding that for two beats and then hitting this F.
One, two, three, four.
Then we're moving the whole [C] thing up to a C.
Same rhythm.
One, two, three, four.
Hitting the G that time.
Doing the same [Dm] thing with a D minor chord.
One, two, three, four.
Hitting the A.
Then playing [C] this chord. _
F, C and G.
_ _ And then we come down these notes.
_ [G] _ _ [Fm] _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Then we go back to our B flat [Bb] from the start.
_ Hitting the F again.
Then we go to the A minor.
[A] _ _ [Am] _ [Bb] So, two, three, four.
[A] One, two, [Am] three, [D] four.
And then doing the D.
_ There's a bass note on the first one.
Played very quietly.
And then the second D is just on it's own.
So that one and then that one.
Okay so now [Fm] I'm going to run through all the sections one after the other.
[N] A intro into A into B into [Gb] C.
I'll play it with the metronome and you can play [G] along if you want if you want to practice.
Okay so here we go.
_ [E] _ _ _ _ [Dm] _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ [D] _ _ [Dm] _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ [Dm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Dm] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ [Bb] _
_ [Gm] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
[Gm] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ [Bb] And there _ _ _ [C] you _ _ [Dm] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Thank you very much for tuning in to the video today.

One, two, three, four.

Same rhythm.
One, two, three, four.
Hitting the G that time.
Doing the same [Dm] thing with a D minor chord.
One, two, three, four.

F, C and G.
_ _ And then we come down these notes.
_ [G] _ _ [Fm] _ _ _ [G] _ _

[A] One, two, [Am] three, [D] four.
