How To Play James Taylor Shower The People 1st Section chords
Start Jamming...
Let's follow the tab as we learn Shower of People.
There are some very cool licks in this song, as so often with James Taylor,
but as always with him, there's no standard accompaniment pick pattern that we can follow.
So I'm going to show you, of course, what's exactly written on the tab,
which is, broadly speaking, [C] what's on the original studio recording.
[Eb] But bear in mind that you can really pick any pattern out of the chord,
[D] and it will sound fine.
And on different nights, if you watch him play it live,
[N] he'll pick slightly different patterns each time.
So don't feel rigidly tied to the tab.
Make the chord shape.
Find a pick pattern you're comfortable with.
And it's the little [E] licks around the chord shapes that, of course, make the song sound unique.
One of those is the intro.
So let's get into that [Fm] first of all, which is going to [Gm] sound like this.
[Bb]
[C] [C] We're starting bar one of [G] your tab with the open sixth and open third [Gm] strings.
[Bb] Then we want, I use middle and ring fingers for this,
the second fret of the [Db] same two strings, sixth [E] and third.
Pinch those [Am] two.
Play the [F] fourth string, which I use the index finger for, of the right hand.
[G] Then I have the middle finger come up one more fret to the sixth and third fret,
and play six and [Bb] two.
Index finger again plays the fourth [F] string.
And now I make a partial A chord [B] with the middle and ring fingers
on the second [C] fret of the second [Bb] and third strings.
Six and two, sorry, five and [Am] two, three and four, which will be open.
[F] I don't know why he does that.
You'd think that that should be an A chord, [Db] but he plays [F] that fourth string open.
[Bb] And that's the [Gb] introduction.
[F] One and [Bb] two and three [C] and four.
[N] I said I use middle and ring fingers here for these two.
[Db]
[D] Now we're into the song proper at bar two of your tab, beginning of the verse.
Let's play that D chord bar [F] two.
[Eb] Now, I would recommend that you definitely get [Bbm] that initial hammer-on.
[E] We're pinching the fourth [Ebm] string with the open [G] first string
and hammering it out of the D chord shape to the second fret.
After [F] that, for the rest of the bar, pick any pattern you like out of [G] strings three, two and one.
[F] The tab says second string, third string, and then four, three, two, three again.
[G]
One [F] and two and three and four.
[B] Now on an A chord, we'll pinch [D] five and the open second string
and again we'll hammer it [A] into the A chord [Bb] shape, second string, second [C] fret.
And now the tab says three, four, five, three, two, [Am] three.
Those being your string numbers.
But again, as before, [D] pick any pattern you like after that [C] initial hammer-on.
So, [G]
so far we've played
You can [F] play the game and you [C] can act out the part, though you
