How to play Layla (the end/outro) on guitar chords
Start Jamming...
So this is a little instructional video on how to play the end of the song Leila and as you might know it has a
piano melody that's a really important part of the end of the song and then a whole bunch of different guitar parts and
Playing in a three-piece band
I wanted to find a way to do the song
And kind of capture some of that and be able to play over it
And this is the the chord voicings in the arrangement that I'll show you here
and then you can improvise and kind of make it your own if you want to learn it and
It's in the key of C.
And so it starts with a C2 chord, but it hits the G bass first
[G] [C] The G [B] [Am] bass note and then the [G] C2
[C] There's a melody
[Bbm] It comes out of the C position here borrowing across the fifth fret and it's just a half step and then a [A] whole step on the [C] B
[G] [A] [C]
[G] And
Then it plays an F a series of different variations on the F chord
starting with an F chord like this on the fifth fret if you can see that [B] and
[Am] Hopefully you're familiar with that kind of an F chord and then you throw a G note on which makes it kind of an F2
[F]
And then to an F major 7
[C] Which is these two [B] on the second and third strings on the [F] fifth fret and then this?
That's one on the third fret of the D string
[Dm] F6 and then back again
And then [A] back to the C again with the [Abm] G bass
[G]
[C]
[G] [C]
[Cm] The G, [F] F2, F
[Am]
[Dm] And
Then it goes to [Ab] a B flat 2 [F] and again you hit the the bass first, which you use an F bass this time
[Bb]
And [Eb] then there's a melody that goes [Bb] with that B flat chord [Eb] which [E] is [Am] on the B string
[E]
[Ab] The [C]
B flat [F] part again goes the F [Bb] bass
And
See the B flat 2
[C] [Gm]
[Ab] And [C]
[A] [C]
[D] [Ab] then [Cm]
it walks down to an A [Ab] minor from the [C] C
[B] [A]
[Am] It's the regular A minor chord [A] and it plays a melody and I'll show you the melody without the chord [Ab] first it goes
[G] [E]
[Bb] [C] [Gm] [E]
[C] [E] [Am]
And
[G] Then it plays a D minor with the G a high G, so it's like a D minor chord, but you throw a G on
[Dm] D minor and then a open E string [G] so with the D minor [Dm] G
[E] [G]
This is that G with the two high notes up here
D and a G up high
[E]
[F] And it walks that little melody it's a D [Bm] note [E] open E
[F]
So [E] the [G] G is it
[Em] [B] [G] [Fm]
And then you play a C bar chord and you start with a sus [C] [D] so it's a C with the [F] sus
[C]
[B] [D]
[Fm] [C] [Bb]
[B] [Am]
[Em] And
[Db] Then this [E] time we're going to play the D minor with note with an open E string
[D] So this time the D minor has an open E string and we just play all the [B] notes of that [E] chord
[D]
You [Ab]
get these headphones [E] off that's what's rubbing the string
[D] And then it's a G [G] and we're going to walk a little series of thirds down under under this G bass [C] note
So it starts with these two strings on the fifth fret to be in the G string on the fifth [Eb] fret over a G [C] bass note
It's just a series of thirds walking [G] down the next one is like a G chord
[E]
[D] [G] And [B]
then it's like a sus with an extra [Am] a note
[G] [C]
[G] [A] [G]
[C]
[G]
[C] [F]
[E] [Dm]
[G] [C]
[F] [Dm] [F]
[Bb] [Fm] [E]
[D] [Ab] [C]
It
Goes through that cycle a couple times at the end you can actually do it as long as you want
There's a lot of improvising you can do I've just showed you the chords, but [Cm]
as the song goes along you might want to want to
[A] Do some things with the melody that are different
[C] Different
[F]
[Dm] [G] [C]
[F]
[C] [Dm] [Gm] [Bb]
[Eb] [Bb] [Cm]
[C] [G]
walk [Eb] down
[C] [G] [Am]
[Em] [G] [Dm] [G]
[Em] [F]
[C] [G] [Am]
[Em]
[F] [G] [F]
[C]
[A]
[F] [C] [Dm] [Gm]
[C]
You
Just [Ab] you can do different things and and splash around with it and a lot of times
I'll end it on a on a [B] C major 7 [A] chord [Bb] so when it goes
[Ab] [G] [Ab] So
[G] [C]
those are some things you can play around with there's a lot
it's a real rich melody and there's a lot of room for improvising and if you have a keyboard player or a
[Am] Looper and you can record some tracks underneath.
There's a really a lot of
Cool opportunities for playing lead over those chord changes, so hope you have fun with that
