How to play Lounge Piano (... and impress Everyone!) chords
Start Jamming...
Do we want to learn how to empharize in the lounge style?
You just need two chords.
[A] [C]
[G] [B]
[Am] [Abm] [Fm]
[C] C6, D diminished.
[D] [Am] Here we have C6 and its inversions.
And here is D diminished and its [D] inversions.
[Bm] Then this scale occurs from these two chords.
[D]
[C] Don't think about the scale, just think about two chords.
[D] Now play the scale with just these two chords.
[G]
[Am] [G] [Am]
Alternate between the two chords.
[D]
[Am] [G] [Am]
We can even create small melodies with these two chords.
[C] [B] [Ab] [C]
Now we can try to borrow a note from the other chords.
So we have the [Em] Cmaj6 here.
[E] Borrow the D from the D diminished.
[C]
[Am] [C]
We can do the same with the D diminished.
[D] [G]
[C] [Gb] Now mix in some notes from the scale in unison [G] to play a little solo.
[A] [G]
[Ab] [C] [Ab]
[Em] [A]
[Em] We can also play the solo in the right hand [F] and the chords in the left [Am] hand.
[B]
[C] [A]
[C] [D] [B]
[C] Or we can play the chords with the right hand and the solo in the bass with the left hand.
[D] [F]
[C]
Now one last trick.
Play one note from [E] the first chord, [C] Cmaj6.
Play two notes from the diminished chord.
[Bm]
Play three notes from the Cmaj6.
[Am] All notes from [B] the diminished.
[C] And so on.
[Em] [D] [C]
See how it simulates a hand fan when it unfolds over the keyboard.
[G] [C] [Abm]
We can of course do it in the other direction as well.
[G] [Am] [E] Or start from a different note.
[Em] [Gb] Start from two notes [Am] instead of one note.
[F] [Em] Here is how you can use it all to improvise in the lounge style.
[E]
[C] [G] [C]
[A]
[C] [G] [B] [Am]
[Abm] [Fm] [D]
[C]
[Em] Happy practicing and until next time.
[B] [C]
[D] [E]
